Chapter 11: 11
Nina scans the forest floor, searching for a suitable projectile. She spots a smooth, grey stone, roughly the size of her fist. Taking a deep breath to steady her nerves, she grips the stone firmly and, with a silent prayer to whatever deities might be listening, she heaves it into the darkness in the hollow. The stone impacts with a dull thud, followed by a series of unsettling clicks and scrapes echoing from within.
Silence descends again, thick and heavy, pressing down on Nina like a physical weight. Rex whines anxiously, his tail tucked between his legs, his body pressed close to Nina's. The humming persists, but now it's accompanied by a low, guttural growl, resonating from deep within the earth itself, making the hair on the back of Nina's neck stand on end. The sweet, cloying scent of the herbs is still present, but now it's overwhelmed by a sharp, acrid smell, something metallic and disturbingly reminiscent of blood.
Nina feels a cold dread creeping into her heart. The stone test revealed more than just the presence of traps or enemies; it hinted at something far more sinister, something that reacts not only to sight and sound, but also to physical disturbance. Whatever lurks in that darkness is clearly intelligent or at least possesses a sophisticated awareness of its surrounding. The question isn't just if she should proceed, but how.
The simple throw of a stone has painted a far more unsettling picture than the illusory rabbit. The air vibrates with anticipation and a palpable sense of danger.
