A Hero's Growth

Chapter 3: 3

Nina stared at Elara, her apprehension evident in her wide blue eyes. The weight of the task, the unspoken dangers lurking within Elara's words, pressed heavily upon her. Yet, a flicker of determination ignited within her, fueled by a strange mix of fear and a desperate need to prove herself. A silent nod was her answer. Rex whined softly, sensing her inner turmoil, nudged her hand again, offering silent support.

Elara's face softened slightly, a hint of relief in her expression. "Thank you, Nina," she said, her voice hushed with gratitude. "You're braver than you think." She reached out and gently placed a hand on Nina's arm, a gesture surprisingly firm for her delicate frame. "This isn't just finding out what's happening in the Woods, it's about protecting Porthaven."

Nina, emboldened by Elara's unexpected show of confidence swallowed her fear and spoke, her voice still sightly shaky but gaining strength. "What... what is the reward for this... task?" The question hung in the air, a stark contrast to the gravity of the situation. The thought of a reward, of tangible recompense for the immense risk she was about to undertake, felt oddly out of place, yet crucial for her, a practical anchor in this sea of uncertainty.

Elara hesitated for a moment, a shadow passing across her face. "The guild will, of course, provide you with appropriate compensation for the risks involved," she replied, her tone carefully measured. "But... this is more than just a monetary reward, Nina. The success of this mission could mean the difference between life and death for many." She paused, her gaze piercing. "If you succeed, you will be recognized throughout the Empire as a hero. You will earn a reputation beyond measure, a name whispered in reverence within the halls of power." She opened the wooden box again, the shimmering crystal pulsing faintly. "But," she added, her voice dropping to a near whisper, "failure would mean... something far worse." The unspoken threat hung heavy in the air, a stark reminder of the dangers that lay ahead. The crystal pulsed a little faster, as if responding to the unspoken tension between them.
