A Hero's Growth

Chapter 9: 9

The undergrowth is thick, a tangled mass of thorny vines and broad leaves that snatch at Nina's robes as she follows Rex. The air grows colder, damper, and the scent of the strange hers intensifies, mixing with the earthy smell of decaying leaves and damp wood. Rex moves with surprising agility, weaving effortlessly through the obstacles, his husky form a blur of brown and white against the green. Nina struggles to keep up, her breath catching in her throat with each stumble. The path, if it can even be called that, becomes increasingly narrow, forcing her to squeeze between trees and clamber fallen logs. The light filters weakly through the dense canopy, casting long, dancing shadows that play tricks on her eyes.

Suddenly, Rex stops, his ears pricked, a low growl rumbling in his chest. He stares intently at a massive, gnarled oak tree, its roots spreading like grasping claws across the forest floor. A hollow, almost perfectly circular, gap is visible in the base of the tree, shrouded in an unnatural darkness. A faint humming emanates from within, vibrating in the very air itself. The energy-emitting crystal, Nina realizes, Nina realizes, is somehow connected to this place.

Rex nudges the opening with his nose, then looks back at Nina, his expression pleading, almost urging her to follow. The humming intensifies, accompanied by a low, almost imperceptible whispering sound, like secrets being shared on the wind. Fear prickles at Nina's skin, but the unwavering gaze of her loyal companion and the promise of answers contained within that dark space override her apprehension. She takes a deep breath, grips the worn leather strap of her satchel, and slowly approaches the opening in the ancient oak. The scent of the herbs is overwhelming now, a potent mix of sweetness and decay, almost suffocating. She can almost feel the humming resonating within her very bones. What lies beyond the darkness remaining unknown, but Nina knows, with a certainty that surprises even her, that she must proceed.
