An Imperial Concubine’s Fight for Survival in the Modern Age

Chapter 4: Who sent you?

Hua Yanrou is Lei Chen's concubine.

While, Jia Xin was Lei Feng's concubine.

Hua Yanrou's heart pounded in her chest as her eyes locked with Lei Chen's. His usual composed arrogance now carried a razor-sharp edge, his expression colder than she'd ever seen.

Beside him, Lei Feng stood silently, his eyes reflecting a storm of emotions—anger, betrayal, and something unspoken. But even in this tense moment, his gaze couldn't help but stray toward Jia Xin, lingering on her as though searching for answers she would never give.

Lei Chen's lips curved into a faint smile, though it didn't reach his eyes. "You know," he began, his voice smooth yet dangerously calm, "of all the things this Prince imagined, this wasn't one of them." He took a step closer, his gaze shifting between Hua Yanrou and Jia Xin. "Assassins? Both of you? Truly, I underestimated you, my concubine."

Hua Yanrou's smirk was subtle, but it was full of defiance. "If you thought you knew me, then perhaps I should be the one disappointed."

Lei Chen's eyes narrowed, a cold smile tugging at the corner of his lips. "Disappointed? No, Yanrou. This Prince is not disappointed. Simply... curious." His voice dropped low, almost a whisper, but carrying the weight of menace. "Curious about who managed to turn you, my concubine, into a dagger aimed at my plans. Curious about the fool who thought sending you would work."

Hua Yanrou's eyes flashed with defiance, but she remained calm, almost detached. "You saw only what you wanted to see—nothing more than a tool for your schemes. But I've always been a dagger Lei Chen, aimed exactly where I choose to strike."

Lei Chen took a slow step forward, his gaze never leaving hers, as though trying to read her every thought. "So, you've truly shed your old skin, haven't you? You even address me by name now, as though we're equals. How... quaint."

Jia Xin's eyes flickered toward Hua Yanrou, but she didn't speak.

Here's a smoother revision of their conversation, maintaining the tension while tightening the flow:

Hua Yanrou's lips curled into a faint smile, her gaze unshaken. "Equals? I never needed to be your equal, Lei Chen. I've always been more than you ever imagined, more than you could ever understand. You thought I was a pawn, but now, you'll see just how sharp my strike can be."

Lei Chen chuckled softly, his eyes never leaving hers as he took a step closer. "You've certainly striked something… The problem is, you've shattered years of careful planning. What was it, then? Ambition? Or did someone whisper sweet promises in your ear, offering you a greater prize?"

He tilted his head slightly, his voice lowering but carrying a dangerous edge. "You've surprised me, Yanrou. Not many can do that. And here I thought you were my most trusted ally. My concubine."

Hua Yanrou's lips curled into a bitter smile. "Trusted? Don't flatter yourself. You've never trusted anyone in your life. Isn't that the secret to your success?"

Lei Chen's gaze darkened, but his voice remained steady. "Perhaps. But you played your role well. Too well. Planning the emperor's death with me, plotting to expose the First Prince's corruption... You knew everything, didn't you? And still, you went behind my back."

Hua Yanrou raised an eyebrow, leaning forward against her restraints. "I had to. Trust isn't given; it's earned. And what better way to earn yours than to play along with your grand plans?"

Lei Feng laughed softly, shaking his head. "So it was all an act? Impressive." His gaze shifted to Jia Xin, sharp and unrelenting. "But tell me, was it worth it? Throwing away years of meticulous planning just to flaunt your cleverness?"

Jia Xin hesitated, pressing her lips together, unsure how to respond.

They had been partners for years, bound by a mission that required her to infiltrate the palace. Yet, despite her intentions, she couldn't deny the feelings she had developed for him. Lei Feng had been nothing but a devoted husband to her, a fact that made the betrayal sting even more.

But the mission was over. There was no going back.

Jia Xin steeled herself, forcing the hurt and shame in her eyes to harden into something cold and unyielding.

"Just as you had your plans, we had ours," she said, her voice steady as she met Lei Feng's gaze head-on.

The warmth that once passed between their eyes was gone, replaced by a frigid distance. Where love had once flourished, only coldness remained.

Hua Yanrou's gaze flickered toward him, her tone icy. "You think your plans were perfect? Killing the emperor, exposing the First Prince... It was a house of cards waiting to fall. You underestimated the chaos that would follow."

Lei Chen's jaw tightened, but his tone remained measured. "And you think your actions were better? You've jeopardized everything. Do you even realize the damage you've done?"

Hua Yanrou's eyes burned with defiance. "You mean the damage to your ambition? I never cared about your plans, Lei Chen. My plans for this kingdom differ from yours."

Lei Chen's expression hardened, but there was a flicker of something else in his eyes—pain, perhaps, or disappointment. "Different plans? For someone who stood by my side, who swore loyalty to me, you've done a fine job of tearing everything apart."

Hua Yanrou smirked. "Loyalty? Don't pretend you believed that. We both know I was a means to an end for you, just as you were for me."

Lei Chen stepped closer, his voice dropping. "Who sent you? Who put you on this path?"

Hua Yanrou leaned back, her smirk deepening. "And you expect me to answer that?"

Lei Chen studied her for a moment, his eyes narrowing. "Maybe not now. But you know what happens to people thrown into this chamber, Yanrou. They always tell me what I want to know eventually. The funny thing is, they never leave alive, even after they do."

Jia Xin stirred beside her, his breath quickening, but Hua Yanrou's composure didn't waver. "You're mistaken if you think I'll break. You should know me better than that."

Lei Chen hesitated, his gaze softening briefly before he turned away, pacing slowly. "You could have been more, Yanrou. You helped this prince plan everything—down to the last detail. We could have reshaped this kingdom together. But now..." He stopped and looked back at her, his tone colder. "Now you've made yourself my enemy."
