Chapter 2: Centuries in Nothingness
[Ivis from Tastilla village prays for her son Orth to recover from his illness.]
[Shazia from Lulma town prays for her daughter Evi to recover.]
[Sylke from Alensia town prays for her dead son Errol to be revived.]
[Thorbert from Ponsar village prays for his son Perrin to recover.]
[Norton from Oudin village prays…]

Zayne briefly looked through the contents of the system messages, reading all of their content with just a single glance. "Which of these are the cheapest to fulfill?"
[Fulfilling Jazmyn's from Betai village prayer costs 47 points.]
[Fulfilling Somen's from Narai village prayer costs 73 points.]
[Fulfilling Shazia's from Lulma town prayer costs 126 points.]
[Fulfilling Wilfer's from…]
"Alright, let's go with Jazmyn from Betai and Shazia from Lulma… And then Eloy from Swarun. Move on."
All the glowing messages disappeared, countless new ones popping up in their place.
[Elisha from Orica village prays for Zino to return her feelings.]
[Justus from Girome village prays for Joi to return his feelings.]
[Beti from…]
"Skip!" Zayne immediately called out, not wasting his time to look at them any further.
They could all just fuck off. If they wanted a lover, they should go and seduce them themselves. Why would Zayne waste any points on such stupid wishes?
"Next!"
[Paxon from Anda village prays to become rich.]
[Rell from Sanse town prays to become rich.]
[Felipe from Vavin town prays for his guild Galeander to prosper.]
[Vera from…]
"Hmm… How much for making the Galeander Guild prosper?"
[874 points]
Zayne hesitated for a moment. "What's the probability of success for that?"
[85%]
"Alright, then let's go with it. Then… What's the cheapest option to make Rell from Sanse rich?"
[Helping Rell from Sanse town discover the treasure buried under the 700-year-old white oak tree outside the south gate costs 62 points.]
"Ah, that treasure. It's been there for quite a while now. 300 years, was it?" Zayne glanced at his status window. "Alright, that's fine. Next!"
[Clarita from Sellon village prays to conceive.]
[Sarina from Porca village prays to conceive.]
[Florrie from…]
"Ignore all that."
Once again, pointless prayers. If they fucked enough, most of them would have their prayers fulfilled even without Zayne's intervention.
"Move on."
This time, Zayne was flooded by seemingly endless messages. There were far more prayers than in any of the previous categories.
And most of them came from the same area.
[Lyre from Beruel village prays for rain.]
[Elten from Beruel village prays for the end of the drought.]
[Inatia from Crofall village prays for rain.]
[Prisca from Beruel village prays for rain.]
[Josiah from Crofall village…]
"Huh, that again?" Zayne read through the popping up messages with annoyance. "Haven't I just solved it?"
[That was five years ago, Host.]
"Yeah, like I said. Not long ago." Zayne looked down at the world. With his god's sight, he could see everything that was happening at any time. The situation indeed looked grave…
"What's the highest probability of success in solving the issue?"
[94%]
"Alright, then let's do it." Zayne let out a sigh - or he would have, if he could still sigh. It was frustrating to solve the same problem over and over again, but he had a lot of believers in that region. If he didn't do something, he would end up losing a lot of them. Not because they would lose their faith, but simply because they would die from starvation and disease.
Wouldn't that be a shame? After all that effort he put into growing his cult…
However, just as he wanted to move on to the next topic, a red system message flashed in front of his eyes.
[Insufficient points.]
"…Not that again." Zayne paused for a moment, taking another glance at his status window.
[Deity: Zayne (Unranked)
Current status:
Believers: 13,253,647
Points: 23,989,234]
He almost felt like tearing up. His points, his painstakingly saved points…
In the end though, he gritted his non-existent teeth. Less believers meant less prayers and offerings, therefore a lower income. Although that region was always poor, so the offerings were nothing to write home about, at least it still generated some points.
He had to think long-term. Very long-term.
"What's the highest success rate I can get for… let's say, 1 million points?"
[2%]
"5 million?"
[3.7%]
"…10 million?" Zayne tried again reluctantly. He was almost physically in pain - despite having no body - mentioning such a high quote.
But it still wasn't enough.
[6.8%]
"Hah!"
[Using all of Host's points can achieve 37.5% success rate.]
That was already looking better, but was still far from a good enough rate to be worth all of those points. And even if it was, Zayne wasn't going to just spend all of his points in one go. It took so much time for him to reach that amount, and he was still far from his goal, that is 100 million points, which would allow him to move on to a different world.
"Hmm? What's that?" Zayne paused, his gaze focusing on the capital of one of the most prosperous human countries, the Kalenden Kingdom.
There was a big parade going on through the city, with the royal marching band, dancers, actors, acrobats, all performing in front of the crowds in an act of worship dedicated to a deity…
…A deity who was not Zayne.
Yes, after all this time, despite all the effort Zayne had put into his work, people still worshiped other gods. Even those who believed in Zayne.
Something in Zayne seemed to snap. How many centuries had it been? Four? Five? Maybe six? And yet, he was still an unranked god, unqualified to even join the Pantheon. At this rate, it would take millennia before he would be able to meet the threshold and advance.
And it was all because of those fuckers, who couldn't even stay loyal to their benevolent god who tried his best to help them out in need, diligently fulfilling their prayers - well, at least some of them. How was Zayne even supposed to carry on his work, if they didn't generate him enough points, wasting their offerings on some random deities which may not even exist?
Frustrated, Zayne wanted to flip his keyboard. But he had no keyboard. Or hands. He was just a consciousness floating in the nothingness, which could do nothing but communicate with the system and observe the world below.
He barely even remembered what a keyboard was. It was something he had used to use often, back when he was still a human on Earth, before he got picked by the system in that damned random draw. All those memories felt so distant, however, that sometimes he wondered whether they were even his in the first place. Only through weird thoughts and habits such as this one he felt any sort of connection to 'Zayne Harris', an ordinary guy from Earth.
He took a deep breath - or at least imagined he did - calming himself down.
"System… Let's just burn them all."
