Chapter 6: 6 Naturo verse - Tenten - 3

Dain woke early the next morning, the village still quiet under the soft hues of dawn. Tenten was still asleep in the next room, her face peaceful for the first time since they'd met.

Dain watched her for a moment, conflicted. She knew she had spent enough time with Tenten, and the System had already achieved some progress in helping the kunoichi recognize her own worth. It was time to move on.

Or at least, that's what she kept telling herself.

System Alert: Continued bonding is optional. However, severing ties abruptly may result in loss of trust. Proceed with caution.

Dain sighed. "Optional, huh? Yeah, right," she muttered to herself.

When Tenten finally stirred and joined her for breakfast, Dain decided to bring it up. "Hey, Tenten," she started, keeping her tone light. "I've been thinking. You've already done so much for me, and I'm really grateful. But I think I can manage on my own from here."

Tenten paused mid-bite, her chopsticks hovering over her food. Her dark eyes flicked to Dain, and a frown tugged at her lips. "What are you talking about?"

"I mean, you've got your own responsibilities," Dain said. "You're a ninja, and I'm just... well, someone passing through. I'd hate to waste your time."

Tenten set her chopsticks down with a clink, her expression unreadable. "Waste my time?" she repeated, her voice sharper than Dain expected. "You think sticking together is a waste of time?"

"No, that's not what I meant—"

"Then what do you mean?" Tenten interrupted, her irritation clear now.

Dain hesitated, the System chiming in her mind: Emotional tension detected. Further attempts to separate may result in negative outcomes. Adjust approach.

With a sigh, Dain softened her tone. "I just don't want to hold you back, Tenten. You're amazing, and I know you've got more important things to focus on than looking after me."

Tenten's frown deepened, and she crossed her arms. "You're not holding me back. And for the record, I don't 'look after' anyone who doesn't deserve it."

There was a beat of silence between them before Tenten added, almost grudgingly, "Besides, it's better to stay together. It's safer that way."

Dain tilted her head, studying her companion. "Are you sure?"

Tenten avoided her gaze, focusing instead on the last remnants of her breakfast. "I wouldn't say it if I wasn't."

The System chimed again: Trust restored. Bond reinforcement possible.

Dain relented with a small smile. "Alright, you win. Let's stick together for now."

Tenten glanced at her, her irritation fading into something softer. "Good."

The duo left the village shortly after breakfast, heading down a forested trail toward what Dain hoped was the direction of the Hidden Leaf Village. The day was warm, and the air was filled with the sounds of rustling leaves and chirping birds.

Tenten seemed more at ease than she had been the day before, though there was still a guarded edge to her. Dain couldn't help but admire how composed she was, even when dealing with a situation as bizarre as escorting a "civilian" like her.

As they walked, the sound of distant commotion reached their ears. Tenten immediately tensed, her hand moving to the weapons pouch at her side. "Something's going on up ahead," she said.

Dain nodded. "Let's check it out."

The two moved swiftly but cautiously toward the source of the noise. As they approached, Dain's heart skipped a beat when she spotted two familiar figures locked in combat with a small group of rogue ninjas.

Sakura Haruno and Tsunade.

Dain's lips curved into a smile of relief. Finally, a familiar face from the Hidden Leaf, and someone she could trust to guide her. She watched as Sakura, with her precise strikes, and Tsunade, with her overwhelming strength, made quick work of their opponents.

"They're incredible," Dain murmured, her gaze fixed on Sakura.

Tenten, standing beside her, noticed the look on Dain's face. Her eyes narrowed slightly, and an uncomfortable tightness settled in her chest. "You know them?" she asked, her tone sharper than she intended.

Dain nodded, her smile widening. "Well, not personally. But I've heard about them. They're legends, especially Tsunade. And Sakura... she's something else."

Tenten's frown deepened. For reasons she couldn't quite articulate, Dain's enthusiasm grated on her. "Sakura's alright, I guess," she said coolly.

Dain didn't seem to notice Tenten's shift in mood as she stepped forward, calling out to the two kunoichi. "Hey! Need any help?"

Tsunade glanced over, raising an eyebrow at the sight of a stranger. "We've got it under control," she said, her tone brusque but not unfriendly.

Sakura, however, gave Dain a curious look before her eyes flicked to Tenten. "Tenten? What are you doing here?"

Tenten hesitated, unsure of how to explain. "I'm... on a mission," she said finally, though her tone lacked conviction.

Dain quickly stepped in, flashing a charming smile. "She's been helping me. I guess you could say I'm sort of a... traveler, trying to find my way to the Hidden Leaf."

Sakura's eyes narrowed slightly, her gaze scrutinizing Dain. "A traveler? You don't look like an ordinary civilian."

Tenten stepped forward, her posture stiff. "She's with me," she said firmly. "It's fine."

Sakura raised an eyebrow but didn't press the issue. "If you say so. I guess I'll see you around."

As the group settled near a clearing to rest, Dain couldn't help but strike up a conversation with Sakura and Tsunade. She asked questions, her tone eager and respectful, clearly impressed by their feats.

Tenten, meanwhile, sat slightly apart from the group, her irritation simmering beneath the surface. She didn't understand why Dain's attention toward Sakura bothered her so much. It wasn't like they were anything more than traveling companions.

Why should I care? she thought, scowling at the ground. She can talk to whoever she wants.

But no matter how much she tried to dismiss it, the sight of Dain's smile—one she hadn't seen directed at anyone else—gnawed at her.

"You seemed to really like Sakura," Tenten said suddenly, her tone carefully neutral.

Dain glanced at her, surprised by the comment. "She's impressive," she admitted. "But so are you, Tenten. Don't sell yourself short."

Tenten's eyes flicked to Dain, searching for any hint of insincerity. When she found none, her irritation softened, replaced by a hesitant warmth.

"You mean that?" she asked quietly.

"Of course I do," Dain said with a small smile. "You're just as capable as she is. Maybe even more."

Tenten felt her cheeks warm, and she looked away, unsure of how to respond.

The System chimed in Dain's mind: Emotional reinforcement achieved. Progress steady.

Dain sighed internally. One step at a time.

As Tsunade dusted off her hands after the scuffle, she turned her sharp amber eyes toward Dain. A sly smile tugged at her lips as she took in the "traveler."

"You seem pretty capable for someone just wandering around," Tsunade remarked, her tone casual but edged with curiosity. "Why don't you travel back with us? We're heading toward the Hidden Leaf anyway."

Dain blinked, momentarily taken aback by the offer. She had expected Tsunade to be far more suspicious, perhaps even interrogative, given her reputation as a no-nonsense leader. But instead, the Hokage seemed... almost too relaxed about the situation.

"Really?" Dain asked, tilting her head with a smile that played the line between genuine and coy. "That's a generous offer, Lady Tsunade. Are you sure I wouldn't be intruding?"

Tsunade let out a soft chuckle, brushing a stray lock of blonde hair behind her ear. "Not at all. You seem like an interesting one, and I wouldn't mind having someone like you around for a while." Her gaze lingered on Dain for a moment before she added, "Besides, it's safer traveling together. Can't let a civilian like you fend off trouble all by yourself, can we?"

The compliment and the lighthearted tone had the desired effect. Dain flashed a charming grin. "Well, in that case, I'd be honored to tag along."

Sakura, standing nearby, raised an eyebrow at the interaction. She seemed less convinced, her eyes flitting between Dain and Tsunade with muted skepticism. "Lady Tsunade," Sakura interjected, "shouldn't we—"

"It's fine," Tsunade cut her off smoothly, waving a dismissive hand. "I've got a good sense for these things. She's harmless."

Dain felt a flicker of suspicion herself. Why wasn't Tsunade questioning her identity more rigorously? The Hokage's relaxed demeanor seemed at odds with her reputation.

System Alert: No immediate threat detected. Tsunade's intuition aligns with the system's identity cover. Proceed without concern.

Dain relaxed slightly at the System's assurance, though she couldn't shake the feeling that Tsunade's laid-back attitude might be a calculated act.
