Chapter 9: Chapter 9: Han’s Hidden Hands
The fall of Yang City!
The critical hub of Han's defenses had been breached, and with it, the gateway to the Han capital lay wide open.
Han was on the brink of destruction.
"Report to General Li!"
"The search within the city is complete!"
"We found no trace of Bao Yuan he has already fled Yang City."
"Requesting permission to lead troops in pursuit and capture him," Wang Yan said as she quickly entered the command tent, bowing respectfully to General Li Teng.
Hearing the report, Li Teng glanced at the gathered officers in the tent. "Yang City may have fallen, but the remnants of Han forces in the surrounding areas remain unchecked. You all have half a month to sweep the outskirts of Yang City and eliminate any remaining Han troops. After that, we march on the Han capital."
"Understood!"
The assembled officers responded in unison before departing to carry out their orders.
Once they were gone, Li Teng turned to the young, pale-faced officer standing before him, his expression filled with helplessness.
"Yan'er, the pursuit of Bao Yuan has already been assigned. You shouldn't be getting involved in this. The battlefield isn't a place for play; danger lurks everywhere."
"I think you should return to General Wang's side," he advised, concern evident in his voice.
Li Teng's tone carried the affection of an elder speaking to a junior. Wang Yan, the youngest daughter of General Wang Jian, had grown up cherished and admired. Born into a military family, she was spirited and ambitious, eager to prove herself on the battlefield.
This campaign against Han had been no exception she had relentlessly insisted on joining the army.
"General Li," Wang Yan replied firmly.
"I have received permission from General Wang to contribute to the war effort, and I am a military captain personally appointed by His Majesty. Han has not yet been subdued; I will not leave the battlefield."
"Please assign me a task, and I will carry it out without fail."
Her determination left Li Teng exasperated.
As a close subordinate of Wang Jian, Li Teng couldn't be too harsh with her. After a moment, his expression turned serious.
"Wang Yan, hear my orders!"
"There are still hidden Han soldiers within Yang City. I assign you command of five hundred personal guards, with the authority to utilize an additional ten thousand logistics troops, to thoroughly clear out the remaining enemy forces within the city."
"You are also tasked with escorting supplies and securing the supply routes."
Hearing the orders, Wang Yan couldn't hide her disappointment but still bowed in acceptance. "I will obey, General."
She turned and left to carry out her duties.
In Yang City, the cleanup continued.
Under the protection of her guards, Wang Yan rode from the city center toward the outskirts.
"Where is the logistics commander?" she called out loudly.
Despite her efforts to project authority, her voice retained a slightly unpolished tone.
"Commander Chen Lei, reporting!"
The logistics officer quickly stepped forward.
"What is the status of the cleanup within the city?" Wang Yan asked directly.
"General, the outer city has mostly been cleared, but the inner city will take another three days to finish," Chen Lei replied promptly.
Seeing the personal guards accompanying her, Chen Lei dared not show any disrespect despite her youthful appearance.
"Speed up the process," Wang Yan ordered.
"Complete the cleanup within two days. Once that's done, conduct a house-to-house search to ensure all remaining enemy forces are eliminated."
"Understood!"
Chen Lei quickly relayed the new orders to his men.
Not far from Wang Yan's location, Zhao Feng overheard her commands and nearly cursed aloud.
"Dammit, is this girl insane?"
"Three days of work shortened to two how many attributes will I miss out on collecting?"
"Damn it all!"
Zhao Feng seethed inwardly.
One less day of cleanup meant losing the chance to collect attributes from hundreds more corpses.
He clenched his fists in frustration but soon calmed himself.
"No, I need a new plan."
"Moving bodies is easy, but digging burial pits takes time. I'll wait until this two-day madness is over, then return to the pits to collect more attributes," Zhao Feng thought, formulating a new approach.
Nothing would stop him from growing stronger.
With this resolve, Zhao Feng focused on making the most of the remaining cleanup time, determined to collect every possible attribute.
His next goal was clear: push all his stats to 400 points.
Meanwhile, in Xinzheng, the Han royal palace.
"What is the situation?" King Han An asked gravely, his face clouded with worry.
"Yang City has fallen," Chancellor Zhang Ping replied solemnly.
The king's face turned ashen as he slumped into his chair.
"With Yang City lost, Xinzheng has no defenses left," he murmured.
"Our capital's forces number less than fifty thousand. We cannot resist Qin's might."
"The power of Qin has reached such terrifying heights?"
"In less than a month of war, three-tenths of our territory have already been lost," he said, trembling in despair.
"Your Majesty," Zhang Ping interjected.
"The Qin attack was swift and relentless, leaving us no time to respond. While our envoys have been sent to Zhao and Wei for aid, they cannot arrive in time."
"Our only option may be to implement the strategy discussed with the general."
"My two-hundred-year legacy is it truly to be destroyed?" King Han An lamented bitterly.
"Your Majesty," Zhang Ping bowed deeply.
"Preserving the royal bloodline and safeguarding Han's foundation are paramount. The possibility of restoring our nation in the future remains."
"Moreover, the general mentioned a final desperate measure. If it succeeds, we could deal a heavy blow to the Qin army and secure support from Zhao and Wei to prevent destruction."
"However, for the sake of Han's future, we must prioritize evacuating the royal bloodline now."
"Very well," the king nodded solemnly, gazing skyward as though seeking divine intervention.
"May the heavens protect Han," he prayed.
Back in Yang City, night fell.
The city grew quiet.
The Qin army, disciplined as ever, refrained from disturbing the local populace. Still, the streets were deserted, with most civilians too afraid to leave their homes.
Though Yang City had been secured, thousands of elite Qin troops patrolled its streets, while the logistics corps camped outside the city, cooking their meals and setting up camp.
But as darkness deepened, something stirred within the city.
Without warning, the seemingly flat ground began to shift. Wooden panels slid aside, revealing tunnels leading underground.
Elsewhere, doors to nondescript houses suddenly swung open.
Armored soldiers emerged, their equipment distinct from the Qin army's. These were Han troops.
"The general has ordered: kill all Qin forces within the city!"
"Retake Yang City!"
In the dead of night, countless Han soldiers surged from their hidden positions, launching a desperate counterattack.
The patrolling Qin soldiers heard the commotion.
"What was that sound?"
"Enemy attack!"
"Han troops are still hiding in the city!"
"Alert the general! Form ranks and prepare to fight!"
"Quickly, to arms!"
