Chapter 38: Chapter 38: Yhwach: I am the Man Who Will Replace the Soul King
"Soul King, wait for me."
Yhwach stood silently amidst the ruins, his gaze unwavering, fixed on the Soul King Palace suspended high above the Seireitei.
As the son of the Soul King, he had never forgotten his purpose. He was born to replace the Soul King, to become the new, true god of the three realms.
He envisioned his ascension to the Soul King Palace, the absorption of his father's remaining power, and his transformation into a true deity.
He would accomplish what the Soul King himself could not: a complete and absolute dominion over the realms, before those five treacherous noble families turned his father into a mere linchpin, a "wedge" to maintain the fractured world.
However, Yhwach was tragically mistaken in his interpretation of the Soul King's will.
He failed to grasp that his understanding of "replacement" differed vastly from the Soul King's true intent.

East Gate of the Seireitei—Sōryūmon (Blue Flow Gate)
After Chōjirō's Tenjō Kūra echoed through the minds of every Gotei 13 captain, they each began their own counterattacks.
"Huh? Araki, even Captain-Commander Yamamoto, who departed later, has already cleared the enemy forces in the 1st Division's sector?"
Saitō, Captain of the 6th Division, exclaimed, adjusting her twin ponytails in a display of barely concealed anxiety. She stood amidst a throng of Quincy, her white haori fluttering around her.
"Damn it! It seems our Sixth Division is lagging far behind!" she muttered. "At this rate, we won't even have a chance to distinguish ourselves in this war! We'll be lucky to escape a scolding from Old Man Yama when it's over!"
The Quincy surrounding her exchanged confused glances. "Hey, is this woman alright?" one whispered. "Someone like this is a captain of the Gotei 13? Perhaps these so-called Shinigami captains aren't so impressive after all." They nocked their arrows, deciding to test her apparent instability.
Swish!
But before the Quincy could loose their arrows, a blur of cold light erupted before them.
Red filled the air as the Quincy suddenly found their bow-wielding hands severed, flying through the air.
"Aah! My hand! My drawing hand!" Shrill screams echoed across the battlefield.
"You pests!" Saitō roared, her Zanpakuto flashing like streaks of violet lightning.
"It's because there are so many of you, like cockroaches, that we can never exterminate you all! That's why I'm falling behind Araki and Captain-Commander Yamamoto! Die! Die! Die!"
With each swing of her blade, Quincy's heads flew like grotesque lanterns into the sky, followed by the heavy thuds of their headless bodies hitting the ground.
"Not enough! Not fast enough!" Saitō muttered, her speed and ferocity increasing with each kill.
Minutes passed, and the white of Saitō's haori was now stained crimson. She had lost count of the Quincy she had slain.
It was a meaningless exercise, like counting the grains of sand on a beach. As long as the enemy remained, she would continue to cut them down.
"Ugh! This is getting tedious! Can someone tell me how many are left?" Another flash of light, more falling Quincy.
Saitō stood atop a growing mountain of corpses, addressing the remaining Quincy.
But they remained silent, refusing to answer the questions of a blood-soaked demon. To them, Saitō was not a Shinigami but a butcher from the depths of hell.
"Die, you lunatic!" A Quincy in a Sternritter uniform, clutching a Quincy sword, charged at Saitō.
"A death wish?" Saitō licked her lips, raising her zanpakutō to meet the attack.
Pah!
Before Saitō could move, a dark blur intercepted, striking the charging Quincy with a swift, brutal kick that snapped his neck.
The figure landed gracefully beside Saitō, revealing Shihōin Chika, Captain of the 2nd Division. He had purple hair, dark skin, and wore the same white haori as Saitō.
"Chika? You're here." Saitō said, a hint of annoyance in her voice.
"What? Disappointed to see me?" He asked, wiping blood from his foot.
"Tch," Saitō clicked her tongue. "With everything happening in the Seireitei, as the head of the Shihōin family, shouldn't you be handling things at home?"
"I've left the family matters to my younger brother," Chika replied with a carefree grin. "I'm the acting head now. It's quite relaxing."
His casual disregard for responsibility and his tendency to delegate everything to his younger sibling mirrored the later behavior of Yoruichi Shihōin.
"You two should stop chattering! The captain-commander is summoning us," a voice interrupted. With a series of swift, clean strikes, a figure materialized beside them.
It was Bats'unsai Katori, Captain of the 8th Division.
Her beautiful features were set in a cold, emotionless mask as she effortlessly dispatched several Quincy with her naginata. To her, killing Quincy was as trivial as crushing insects.
"Bats'unsai, you're here too?" Saitō frowned. More captains vying for "merit" meant less for her. She needed to act quickly.
"Time is short. You go left; I'll go right." Chika declared.
"Agreed!" Saitō responded.
In the next instant, two flashes of light streaked across the battlefield, like twin reapers harvesting souls.
More and more Quincy fell, their lives extinguished in a brutal, swift massacre. The corpses piled up, forming a gruesome monument to the carnage.
The stench of blood mingled with the chill autumn wind.
"These guys are insane!" A Quincy whispered in terror. "They don't care about anyone's lives, not even their own comrades!"
"They're butchers! Executioners! Monsters!" another cried. "How can we fight against demons from hell?"
The remaining Quincy at Sōryūmon stared in despair at Saitō, standing atop the mountain of corpses, her Zanpakuto dripping with blood; at Chika, a whirlwind of brutal hand-to-hand combat; and at Bats'unsai, a beautiful yet deadly killer, her naginata reaping lives with cold precision.
They were facing beings far beyond their comprehension, beings who seemed to revel in the slaughter.
