After arriving at the hospital, George and Misaka Mikoto were greeted by the sight of a large number of Misaka clones lying in hospital beds, undergoing medical examinations.
Since the Misaka clones had been artificially grown to maturity in just 14 days using drugs, it was inevitable that they had numerous health issues.
If they wanted to live like normal people, these examinations were absolutely necessary.
As it was already late at night, Misaka Mikoto had missed the curfew for the girls' dormitory. Fearing the wrath of the fearsome dorm supervisor, she decided to stay the night at the hospital, lying on a bed and waiting for the results of the examinations.
Naturally, George stayed at the hospital as well.
However, unlike the other Misaka clones, George didn't undergo a medical examination.
No matter what flaws his body might have originally had, the fusion of his unique constitution from another world had resolved most of them.
What's more, if the hospital were to obtain a sample of his genetic material, it could spell big trouble.
To say nothing of the other abilities within him, the mere presence of wizard blood in his veins would be enough to drive Academy City's scientists mad with curiosity.
The next morning, the hospital's chief doctor, Heaven Canceller, approached Misaka Mikoto and George.
"The results of the examinations aren't very good. Because of the drugs used to accelerate their growth, these children's lifespans have been drastically shortened. If this continues, they'll only live for another two to three years at most."
"What? Only two to three years?!"
Misaka Mikoto was stunned.
She had gone through so much to save her sisters, and now she was being told they might only live for a few years. How could she possibly accept that?
"Under normal circumstances, that would indeed be the case," Heaven Canceller continued. "However, with regular adjustments and treatment to slow their cellular division and restore hormonal balance, it's possible for them to achieve a normal human lifespan."
These words brought some relief to Misaka Mikoto, but her sense of dread quickly returned.
"But there's a problem," Heaven Canceller said with a sigh. "There are far too many of them, and given the current resources in Academy City, it's simply impossible to provide adjustments and treatment for all of them. Not to mention, this would require a significant amount of funding."
That was no surprise—there were over 10,000 Misaka clones, all of whom would require regular monitoring and treatment.
"Fortunately, the council has been made aware of this situation and is reportedly furious over the unauthorized experiments conducted by the school's research facilities.
The council has decided to fund the treatment for these children and will arrange for them to be sent to research facilities in various countries, where they'll receive regular checkups and treatment."
"Could you maybe say everything at once?" Misaka Mikoto said, raising her eyebrows in frustration. She and Heaven Canceller were old acquaintances—he had helped her with many things in the past—so she didn't hesitate to express her annoyance.
The idea that the council hadn't known about the experiments was laughable to her.
After all, when she had reviewed the Mass-Produced Esper Program, the documentation clearly stated that Academy City's most powerful supercomputer, Tree Diagram, had been used to calculate that the Misaka clones would be less than 1% as powerful as the original. That was the reason the program was supposedly abandoned.
However, Tree Diagram could not have been used without the explicit approval of the council's higher-ups.
It was clear that this experiment had been sanctioned by the council all along. Otherwise, it was impossible for them to remain unaware of the numerous battles between Accelerator and the Misaka clones that had taken place in Academy City.
But none of that mattered anymore. If the council was now willing to make amends, that was a good thing.
Misaka Mikoto wasn't too worried about the council secretly resuming experiments on her sisters once they were sent abroad. She would frequently visit the Misaka clones who remained in Academy City, and with the Misaka Network, she could monitor the condition of every single one of her sisters at any time.
"As expected, they're considered valuable assets," George remarked, unsurprised by the outcome.
As long as the Misaka clones had value, the council wouldn't abandon them.
What did catch him off guard, however, was the decision to send them to research facilities abroad. After all, if the clones were sent overseas, retrieving them later might not be so simple.
Once the clones started living in those foreign facilities, they would make new friends, adapt to their new surroundings, and might even choose to stay there permanently.
Unless, of course, the council had some kind of contingency plan to retain control over the Misaka clones.
However, these matters didn't concern George. As long as the council didn't trouble him, he had no interest in meddling further.
His primary focus now was to stay close to Misaka Mikoto, figure out how to enhance his Level 4 ability to Level 5, and explore whether this world had any magic. If magic existed, he wanted to learn something valuable.
"I'll come to visit you all when I have time," George said.
With the Misaka Sisters' immediate crisis resolved, Misaka Mikoto shook hands with George and bid him a temporary farewell. Having been away all night, she worried that her friends—especially her dormmate Shirai Kuroko—would be concerned about her absence.
To Misaka Mikoto, George was just another Misaka clone, albeit one with stronger powers and a more mature, dependable demeanor.
At least he wouldn't mock her as immature like Misaka 9982 often did.
After Misaka Mikoto left, Heaven Canceller turned to George and asked,
"Are you sure you don't need a physical examination? Logically speaking, even if your esper ability has reached Level 4, your body was still artificially accelerated with drugs. At most, you wouldn't live beyond three years."
"There's no need. I can solve this issue myself."
George declined Heaven Canceller's offer again before walking out of the hospital alone.
Now that he had an official identity in Academy City, he could move around freely without concern.
Initially, he had considered enrolling at Tokiwadai Middle School, where Misaka Mikoto studied. Not only could he learn knowledge to develop his abilities, but he could also interact with Misaka Mikoto more closely and master his skills further.
But upon further thought, he found this approach too inefficient.
With his intellect, the pace of regular classroom lessons was far too slow. It was better to gather relevant materials and self-study. For anything he didn't understand, he could seek help from specialists. After all, Academy City had no shortage of scientists.
As for interacting with Misaka Mikoto, she frequently visited the hospital to check on the Misaka Sisters. Plus, being in Tokiwadai made her easy to locate, so he'd have plenty of opportunities to meet her.
"Sir, if you've got something to say, come out and say it. Following me in secret like this... be careful, or I might deal with you myself," George said abruptly.
He stopped in his tracks not long after leaving the hospital and turned to look behind him.
With his psychic abilities, even the most skilled tailing techniques were useless against him.
Sure enough, a moment later, a blond young man in a white lab coat emerged from behind a large tree. Half of his face was covered in tattoos.
"You clones are certainly interesting," the man said with a crazed grin. "You're far more vigilant than the original."
"You're with the council?" George asked, raising an eyebrow as he quickly deduced the man's identity.
Unlike the other Misaka clones, George knew the council wouldn't leave him unchecked. Since brute force wasn't an option, they'd likely try a softer approach, something he had already anticipated.
"Clever," the blond man replied with a faintly manic smile. "I'm Kakine Teitoku, leader of the council's direct subordinate, the Hound Dog Unit. I'm here to invite you to join our unit. So, what do you say?"
