Chapter 365: Foolish Quard
"Give the recording to me" Rezen demanded and the assassins didn't dare neglect his order.
One of them retrieved a circular object which was their student token in the academy. In reality, this token was a 'cellphone' with the function of sending messages to other people while also storing information and receiving announcements that the academy does from time to time.
With a simple control over mana, the token floated in the air and landed on top of Rezen's palm. He activated the token and a screen was projected from it.
After some tinkering, he found the recording which was indeed more than enough to convict Quard. With such a piece of irrefutable evidence, he wouldn't be able to defend himself.
If Quard did this kind of vile thing before the war erupted, he might be let off by just paying. Unfortunately, he was too late. He ordered the assassination of a mage, and a talented one at that when humanity is in danger.
What was a crime that he previously could be let off lightly has become a grave one wherein he wouldn't be killed but would instead be sent to the most dangerous battlefield. That is almost no different than death as the casualty rate on those battlefields is the highest.
"Good job. Dismantle the isolation barrier and give it to me" Rezen ordered after securing the evidence.
The isolation barrier might come into handy and even if it doesn't, he could sell it for some money.
Even a Senior Mage would fail to detect the isolation barrier. Of course, the premise is that they are not actively searching.
There are isolation barriers that can even hide from a Senior Mage's senses but they are terribly expensive. Even affluent families wouldn't be able to take out such things casually.
As such, Rezen doesn't believe that these bastards have such an expensive and precious treasure.
With pained expressions, the three assassins temporarily ignored their injuries after taking some healing potion and went to dismantle the isolation barrier.
Perhaps, it was because of the trauma that Rezen inflicted on them but even though they can refuse to hand the isolation barrier after they dismantled it, they didn't do it and instead did an honest work.
"You can go now and if I were you, I would use the limited time you have to increase your cultivation" Rezen said with a sneer, and the three assassins can't help but shudder.
Rezen's words... how can they understand it?
He will surely use the recording to send Quard into the most dangerous battlefields. As accomplices, could they escape the same fate? Obviously not!
After the three went out of his tent, Rezen inspected the isolation barrier. In fact, the barrier was erected using three red flags. It might be the reason why those three joined hands. Each of them might possess one flag and only when all red flags are activated can the isolation barrier be erected.
As for deactivating it, they must also manually deactivate all three of the flags.
"Wait!" Rezen's eyes lit up after inspecting the red flags. Although they look tattered now, probably previously damaged, their function hasn't diminished much.
"This is an isolation barrier that can even fool a Senior Mage's senses!" Rezen can't help but exclaim. He didn't expect that those three would have this kind of treasure with them. Who would have thought that they would stumble into this kind of treasure?
No wonder they look really constipated when handling the red flags.
"Hehehe, with this, my plans would be easier to achieve. The only downside is that to activate the isolation barrier, a large amount of mana stones are needed and it's not low-grade mana stones but mid-grade ones" Rezen sighed.
With his spirit plants from the farm or by selling his potions, he could amass a large number of low-grade mana stones.
However, mid-grade mana stones are often used for transactions at the level of Senior beings. While he can get some by exchanging using low-grade mana stones, he would need to pay more than the equivalent of low-grade mana stones to mid-grade mana stones.
Not to mention, very few are willing to do that, further inflating the price of conversion. Still, beggars can't be choosers. Rezen already got the flags for free, the least he could do is to secure the fuel himself.
As for how to secure the fuel... heh... Rezen smiled sinisterly as he just thought of a brilliant plan.
While holding the token storing the evidence, Rezen walked out of his tent and went to a tent of a certain someone.
As soon as Rezen entered the tent, he saw a person inside anxiously pacing back and forth.
"Are you anxious to hear about my death?" Rezen said playfully causing Quard to stop moving.
After seeing Rezen, a bad premonition gripped his heart. Only when he calmed down a bit did he realize how foolish his action was.
If it was found out that he commissioned people to assassinate a mage in the camp, the consequences would be unimaginable.
After all, humans are already facing huge pressure from the magic beasts. Those fighting in the war are constantly wary of sneak attacks from humanity's enemy.
But now, they actually also have to be wary of their fellow human's assassination? Unacceptable! This was simply unacceptable!
Even if it was just to give a warning, Quard's fate would be far from good. His family might be strong with Senior Mages but so what?
They are only strong amongst the families inside the outer walls. Those that are inside the inner and core walls can easily flatten them to death!
"Y-you... w-what the hell are you saying?!" Quard exploded, his guilty conscience too obvious in front of Rezen.
"You better tone down your arrogance" Rezen said coldly and he didn't waste any time. He used the token to play the recording of Quard commissioning the three mages to kill Rezen in secret.
"Shut up! What do you want?!" Quard asked angrily with a glare. The evidence was too obvious and there is no way to bluff his way through. He can only hope that Rezen won't report this incident.
As for snatching the evidence? Heh... Quard doesn't have the power to do that!
As of the moment, he is still a mid-cycle Junior Mage. How can he win against Rezen who's a high-cycle Junior Mage?
Not to mention, when the two of them were still at the same rank, Rezen could already defeat him. What more now that there was a huge difference in their cultivation realm?
He might be defeated before even successfully making one move!
"What I want is simple... give me everything that you have" Rezen said with an evil grin. Explore hidden tales at empire
He is here to rob!
A mage can't have too many resources and if there's a chance, Rezen would take as many as he can.
Despite the obvious advantages he has with his farm, what he has are just spirit plants most of which he cannot even utilize. There are many more forms of resources that Rezen was severely lacking.
Now that there is a chance to extort resources, why should Rezen not do it?
"You... are you insane?! I'll give you a hundred thousand low-grade mana stones if you will destroy that token" Quard offered but Rezen merely shrugged his shoulders.
That might be a huge sum but... so what? Rezen is greedier than that, he wants everything that Quard has!
In the end, with Rezen's threat, he left the tent after stripping Quard of all the resources he owned in return, he promised not to give the evidence to the authorities.
"Next time, if you are planning something like this, be more careful and smarter" Rezen said while tapping Quard on his shoulder.
The next morning, Quard along with the three mages he commissioned were arrested and are to be sent to the frontlines.
Quard is still too naïve. He actually believed Rezen? How stupid!
Compared to other mages in the academy who only have to fight in the war from time to time before being granted freedom, Quard and the other three's fate would be different.
As long as the war with the magic beasts hasn't stopped, they would have no choice but to continue fighting.
If the war ended, Quard might be released but the premise of that is that he must survive!
In those dangerous battlefields, even Senior Rank Mages die and fall. Surely, the casualty rate of Junior Mages even those that are in the peak is not low, much less Quard which is only at the mid-cycle.
"Finally, one troublesome guy is dealt with" Rezen thought with a grin.
Even if Quard does miraculously survive the war, Rezen already did something that would make sure that wouldn't happen.
The pat on the shoulder he gave that bastard was not just him being playful, it was the pat of death!
