Chapter 14: The Frostbound Expanse
The portal spat them out into a place of biting chill, icy gusts wailing like a mournful chorus. Snow cut across the air; visibility was but a few feet ahead. Crunched under every step, ground beneath Aiden's boots - frozen tundra to the eyeless horizon.
Aiden pulled his cloak tighter around himself, shivering. "Great. From sandstorms to snowstorms. Whoever's designing these realms has a sick sense of humor."
The woman didn't say anything, her sharp eyes scanning their surroundings. She seemed not to mind the cold at all, her every movement precise as she adjusted the hood of her cloak. Finally, she pointed toward a faint glow in the distance.
"There," she said, her voice steady. "That light is coming from the rift's anchor in this realm."
"Let me guess," Aiden said, trudging through the snow behind her. "It's surrounded by monsters, illusions, and probably some kind of boss fight."
"Most likely," she said without a hint of sarcasm, her tone as matter-of-fact as ever.
The two pressed on, the icy wind nipping at their exposed skin. As they drew closer, the glow became brighter, illuminating a spire of crystalline ice which seemed to rise directly from the frozen earth. It glowed with a faintly otherworldly light, this same crimson and black energy pulsing through it as had the other corrupted anchors they'd encountered.
Jagged ice formations jutted out of the spire like the ribs of some long-dead beast, forming a treacherous maze around the structure. Aiden's breath fogged in the frigid air as he examined the thing.
"Well, this looks inviting," he said, his sarcasm cutting through the silence.
He was ignored by her as she tiptoed over the ice carefully. The ice was slippery, and the step could easily tumble them into jagged ice at any moment.
"We have to find the core," she declared, her voice firm. "It will be at the center of the spire. Prepare for anything.
As they moved through the maze, the wind began to shift, carrying with it an eerie, mournful sound. It wasn't the howl of the storm but something else entirely—a haunting melody that seemed to come from all directions at once.
Aiden stopped, his brow furrowing. "Do you hear that?"
The woman nodded, her grip tightening on her sword. "It's the rift's influence. It's trying to disorient us.
The melody grew louder, and icy formations around them began to shimmer and shift. Shadows moved inside the ice. Their forms could not be recognized, but Aiden felt some kind of creepiness. Cold was seeping inside his bones: not just his physical bones, but his very soul, the deep, biting chill that might extinguish all his resolve.
He shook his head, as if trying to clear his thoughts. "This place is seriously messing with my head.
"Focus," the woman said sharply, her voice cutting through the haze. "Don't let it get to you."
They continued on, the spire looming larger with each step. The shadows within the ice grew more defined, their movements erratic and unsettling. Aiden caught glimpses of faces—twisted, anguished expressions that seemed to follow them as they walked.
"Are those. people?" he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
"Remnants of the realm's inhabitants," she said. "Their souls are trapped, feeding the rift's power. We have to free them."
Aiden gulped hard. His grip on his blade tightened. "Right. No pressure."
They reached the bottom of the spire, where the ice gave way to a huge, circular platform, hewn from the same crystalline material. At the center of the rift was a swirling vortex of crimson and black energy suspended above the platform, pulsing with malevolent power.
Between them and the core stood a being encased in jagged ice armor, humanoid but twisted. Frost covered every inch of it, and glowing blue eyes gave off an icy fury.
The creature raised its massive, ice-encrusted blade, and its voice was like the crackling of glaciers in the chamber. "You shall go no further. This realm is mine to protect."
"Protect?" Aiden said, stepping forward. "You call trapping souls and freezing everything alive protection?"
The creature let out a low, rumbling laugh. "You do not understand the rift's purpose. It is not destruction but rebirth. A cleansing of the old to make way for the new."
"We've heard enough," the woman said, her sword glowing with Nexus energy. "Step aside, or be destroyed."
The creature let out a deafening roar, its blade slapping the ice with such force that shards went flying in every direction. Aiden barely avoided the blow, rolling to one side as the platform he stood on cracked and splintered.
"Guess that's a no," he muttered, drawing his blade.
The battle had started, the icy guardian moving with an astonishing speed considering its size. Its attacks did not let up for a second, each swing of its blade leaving behind a trail of frost that coated the ground in a slick, treacherous layer.
Aiden and the woman moved in tandem, their attacks coordinated as they dodged and struck at the creature's vulnerable points. But the icy armor was nearly impenetrable, their blades glancing off its surface with little effect.
"We're not making a dent!" Aiden shouted, narrowly avoiding a swing that sent shards of ice flying past his face.
"The core!" the woman replied, her attention never wavering. "We have to weaken it by disrupting the core!"
Aiden nodded, breaking away from the fight and sprinting toward the swirling vortex above the platform. The guardian roared in fury, turning its attention to him.
"Not so fast!" the woman yelled, intercepting the creature with a flurry of strikes that forced it back.
Aiden strode to the center, his hands glowing with Nexus energy as he focused on its troubled center. He unleashed a blast of light, striking the center of the core and causing it to ripple violently. The guardian let out a pained roar, as its movements grew erratic with cracks spreading across its icy armor.
"It's working!" Aiden shouted, unleashing another blast.
The core shook, its energy waning. The guardian screamed once more, its form beginning to break apart as the ice shattered into uncounted shards that melted into the air.
The core pulsed once, then imploded, its dark energy dissipating into the ether. The icy platform beneath them stabilized, the crushing chill lifting as the influence of the rift began to fade.
Aiden fell on the ground, his breath misting in the chilled air. "That. was way too close."
The woman came over to him, her face unreadable. "You did good. But there's no stopping yet. There are still a few more realms to save."
Aiden let out another groan and struggled to stand up. "Yeah, yeah. No rest for the heroes, right?"
She didn't say anything, already moving towards the Nexus portal that had opened up in the center of the platform. Aiden followed her, his resolve tempered by exhaustion but unbroken.
As they stepped through the portal, the Frostbound Expanse faded behind them, another realm freed from the grip of the rift. The journey was far from over, though.
