Chapter 389: Chapter 389: Allies, Those Who Understand Will Understand
When the Third Hokage heard this, his entire demeanor shifted uneasily.
If Shinki refused to cooperate, the Hokage's office would be in an impossible situation. The Cloud Village, already an ally offering numerous concessions, would expect this favor in return. If Konoha couldn't fulfill such a request, how could the alliance endure?
But Shinki wasn't like most others. If it were Tsunade or someone else, the Hokage might still persuade them through shameless persistence. Shinki, however, was a different story. If he refused, that was it—he wouldn't budge, and he wouldn't even entertain negotiations.
If Shinki didn't agree, the alliance with the Cloud Village would grow strained and awkward.
"I'll do my best to handle this," the Hokage finally muttered, though he wasn't confident.
Fortunately, he didn't plan to confront Shinki directly. Convincing him would require a more indirect approach.
The Hokage decided to consult Tsunade. Perhaps she could be the bridge to Shinki.
In the lounge at Konoha Hospital, Tsunade leaned back, visibly annoyed as the Hokage explained the situation.
"You rushed over here for this? Are you serious?" she snapped, glaring at him.
"It's important," the Hokage replied solemnly. "Negotiations with the Cloud Village have reached the final stage. I suspect the Raikage will bring up this request during the signing."
"Then let them send their jinchūriki here for training," Tsunade replied nonchalantly, stifling a yawn.
"Don't involve me in this, though. I just worked all night and barely got any sleep!"
Before the Hokage could respond, Tsunade waved him off, clearly uninterested in the matter.
"Why do you think Shinki will refuse?" she asked after a pause.
The Hokage hesitated, his expression uncertain.
"Honestly," Tsunade sighed, "you've known Shinki long enough to understand him. He's stubborn, yes, but he's loyal to Konoha. If this truly benefits the village, he won't refuse. Stop overthinking it."
Her words cut through the Hokage's doubts, leaving him momentarily stunned.
As he left the hospital, his thoughts churned. Tsunade was right—Shinki might be difficult, but he wouldn't act against Konoha's interests. Yet, recent strained relationships with Shinki had skewed their perceptions, making them forget this simple truth.
When the Hokage returned to his office, Mitokado Homura immediately approached him, concern written all over his face.
"You didn't argue with Tsunade, did you? This is a delicate time; we can't afford unnecessary conflicts!"
The Hokage sighed. "No, she simply dismissed me, saying this wasn't worth bothering her over. And she's right. We've all grown so paranoid about Shinki's defiance that we've forgotten he's one of us."
Homura blinked in realization. The Hokage's words struck a chord—he'd noticed Shinki's strange expression during their conversation earlier. It was as if Shinki was silently mocking their needless anxiety.
They had let paranoia cloud their judgment, imagining worst-case scenarios instead of trusting in their ally.
Homura coughed awkwardly. "Well, maybe this misunderstanding is an opportunity. If we can show Shinki trust and respect, it could strengthen our unity. Together, the village will grow stronger."
The Hokage nodded faintly, though his expression remained weary. "Perhaps."
The day of the alliance signing arrived. The negotiations had gone smoothly, with both sides making concessions and reaching agreements. However, as expected, the Raikage brought up his request.
He asked for Shinki's help in training a jinchūriki from the Cloud Village. Though uneasy, the Raikage maintained a confident front.
Konoha's response, however, was carefully crafted.
"Konoha appreciates your sincerity in this alliance," the Hokage said diplomatically. "We are willing to assist in training one jinchūriki from your village. However, the Cloud Village must send this individual to Konoha, and we must emphasize that success cannot be guaranteed. The process depends on many factors beyond our control."
The Raikage considered this carefully. While he'd hoped Konoha might send Shinki to the Cloud Village, he understood their caution. Accepting these terms was better than risking nothing at all.
"Happy cooperation," the Raikage said with a slight bow, sealing the deal.
