Chapter 109: Chapter 111
"He's not a Wood Release Kekkei Genkai ninja but someone else pretending to be him?"
The Third Hokage was visibly surprised. He hadn't expected such a bold speculation from Uchiha Shisui. The possibility had not crossed his mind until now.
"Hokage-sama, this is just my speculation. I'm not certain if it's true," Shisui clarified upon noticing the Hokage's reaction.
"No, your speculation, though bold, is reasonable. It's not impossible," the Third Hokage said after a moment of reflection. He took a deep breath, his tone serious.
Though initially shocking, the theory started to make sense. Several surviving witnesses had confirmed that the Wood Release Kekkei Genkai ninja had demonstrated nearly unstoppable space-time ninjutsu during previous attacks. Yet, during the latest incident, no such ability was displayed.
The lack of this ability was surprising, and the Hokage had summoned Shisui precisely because of his experience in combatting the Wood Release Kekkei Genkai ninja. If the ninja this time was an impersonator, it would explain the discrepancy.
"If someone is indeed impersonating the Wood Release Kekkei Genkai ninja, who do you think it might be?"
"I believe it must be someone holding a grudge against Advisor Danzo. All those killed last night were connected to the Shimura family," Shisui replied after a thoughtful pause.
"True. Those targeted were all related to the Shimura family. It's likely someone with grievances against Advisor Danzo," the Third Hokage agreed, frowning slightly.
"However," he continued, "many members of the Iwasaki clan witnessed this person use Wood Release to kill their clan leader. If someone else was impersonating the Wood Release Kekkei Genkai ninja, how would they be able to use Wood Release?"
"There might be more than one ninja capable of using Wood Release," Shisui suggested. "For instance, I've heard of a senior member of the Anbu who can use it. This could be someone connected to experiments involving the First Hokage's cells."
The Third Hokage's expression hardened at the mention of experiments. "You are correct. There are indeed others who can use Wood Release."
He nodded solemnly. "In the Anbu, there is one such person, codenamed A. He is a survivor of the First Hokage cell experiments conducted by Advisor Danzo."
"Is Advisor Danzo still conducting experiments with the First Hokage's cells?" Shisui's voice held a note of disapproval, his brow furrowed.
"I once discovered that Orochimaru was secretly conducting such research and put an end to it," the Hokage explained. "Advisor Danzo retained some of Orochimaru's data and results, but I cannot confirm whether he is continuing such experiments in secret."
The Hokage's response neatly distanced himself from the controversial experiments. Though he had turned a blind eye to them in the past, he now portrayed himself as someone who had intervened to stop them.
"If Danzo possesses Orochimaru's research data and the impersonator has grievances against him, they could very well be a victim of those experiments," Shisui speculated, his tone cautious.
"That's a strong possibility," the Third Hokage agreed, his face grim.
"If the Wood Release Kekkei Genkai ninja is indeed someone else in disguise, they are likely a victim of such experiments and harboring a deep-seated grudge against Advisor Danzo."
His tone turned resolute. "I will order an investigation into this matter. If Advisor Danzo is conducting such inhumane experiments, I will not tolerate it."
Shisui's respect for the Hokage deepened. The Third Hokage's words reaffirmed his belief that the old man truly stood for justice and peace in Konoha.
…
After returning to the Uchiha compound, Uchiha Fugaku spent some time guiding Uchiha Sasuke before retreating to the secret chamber within his study.
Several days had passed since he had smelted the corpses of the Snow Clan to enhance his power. His Mangekyō Sharingan had recovered its lost strength, and he was now ready for his next step—extracting the Corpse Bone Vein.
With a soft peng, Fugaku unsealed a scroll, summoning the body of a Kaguya clansman.
The corpse belonged to a member of the Kaguya clan, known for their unique and terrifying ability to manipulate their own bones as deadly weapons—a characteristic of the Corpse Bone Vein.
"Corpse Melting," Fugaku murmured, activating the unique ability of his Mangekyō Sharingan.
The pattern in his left eye spun rapidly, and a black vortex formed, drawing the Kaguya clansman's body into its depths.
As the body disappeared, a white, bone-like biological tissue emerged and entered Fugaku's body. The substance seemed to be drawn magnetically to his skeletal structure, spreading throughout his body.
Crack, crack.
His bones emitted sharp, crisp sounds as they underwent a profound transformation. The texture grew denser, harder, and tougher, surpassing even steel. Simultaneously, the activity of his bones, which had long since decreased after adulthood, surged to an unprecedented level.
If measured, his bones' regenerative activity would be hundreds of times that of an ordinary human, and the process wasn't over.
The transformation continued until the last remnants of the Kaguya clansman's body were completely absorbed.
When it was done, Fugaku felt a distinct shift within himself.
He realized that he now possessed the ability to manipulate his bones at will, rapidly growing or regenerating them as needed.
The characteristics of the Corpse Bone Vein were now his. His skeletal structure had become nearly unbreakable, and even if a bone were to fracture, it could be instantly repaired.
With the Corpse Bone Vein integrated into his body, Fugaku felt an unparalleled sense of invincibility. Injuries such as fractures were now a thing of the past.
