The Fake Relationship

Chapter 11: Taking Control

Sophie stepped out of the boardroom during a break and dialed Ethan. His voice was calm but urgent when he answered.

"We have to tackle this head-on," Ethan said. "The longer we let the media spin their own stories, the harder it's going to be to control the narrative."

Sophie leaned against the wall, pinching the bridge of her nose. "What are you suggesting? A press statement?

More than that," Ethan said. "We need to go public, together. Do an interview, perhaps even a live one. We explain our story, set the record straight. If we're honest and upfront, it'll take the wind out of their sails.

She blinked. The idea of being exposed like that, all those feelings and parts of her life for the world to view, made her stomach churn with nervousness. But Ethan's logic was sound. If they did not define their narrative, then someone else would.

"Okay," she said finally. "Let's do it. But it has to be on our terms.

The following days were a whirlwind of preparation. Sophie and Ethan decided on doing their first joint interview with a respected journalist known for his integrity. To top it all, the interview was to be on live, so nothing would be edited or misrepresented.

The morning of the interview, Sophie sat in the makeup chair, her nerves fraying at the edges. Ethan sat beside her, exuding his usual calm confidence. He reached over and took her hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze.

"We've got this," he said softly. "Just be yourself."

Sophie's adrenaline ran high when cameras began rolling. The interviewer gave them a warm welcome before finally getting into all the questions they had wanted the answers to.

"So, Sophie, Ethan, let's tackle the elephant in the room. Your relationship has been under extreme scrutiny. Tell us how it all started."

Sophie cast a glance toward Ethan, and he nodded his encouragement. Taking a deep breath, she went on.

"Okay," she said, her voice even though her heart was racing. "It started off as a business thing. We both agreed to a deal that was good for both of us, but somewhere down the line, it became more than that. We didn't anticipate anything like that, but things between us are real."

Ethan interjected, his voice candid. "We know what it looks like from the outside, and we understand why people might question it. But the truth is, what we have isn't about image or publicity. It's about us."

The interviewer leaned forward, intrigued. "And how do you plan to navigate the challenges of being in the public eye?"

"We will take it one step at a time," Sophie replied. "We are committed to being honest with each other and with the people around us. That's all we can do."

When the interview came to an end, Sophie could finally feel this weight lift from her shoulders. The world would continue to watch and judge; but for the first time ever, she and Ethan were of one mind. They had been given control of their story, as well as of their future.
