Chapter 14: Independence Day part 2

[Washington D.C.; July 4th; 14:00 EDT]

[The Hall of Justice]

Before the Hall of Justice stands Batman and Robin, Green Arrow and Speedy, Aquaman and Aqualad, Superman and Supergirl, Wonder Woman and Wonder girl. Batman turned to his sidekick "Today's the day."

"Welcome to the Hall of Justice." Green Arrow continues.

"Headquarters of the Justice League." Aquaman finishes. Suddenly a pair of red and yellow blurs dash in from behind them.

"Oh, man!" Kid Flash's voice cries out, catching all of their attention and causing them to turn away from the Hall for a moment. Flash skids to a stop first, followed closely by his sidekick.

"I knew we'd be the last ones here." he gripes crossing his arms, causing Flash to raise an eyebrow behind his cowl. As they walk down the area opened so that they can get to the Hall. Off to both sides a crowd goes insane trying to get closer to the heroes. One spectator who's particularly far-off questions quite loudly. "Is that Batman?"

"Look Superman and Supergirl too!" Another person shouts this time a grown woman.

"There's Wonder Woman and Wonder girl over there!" Another little girl shouts near the front of the crowd.

"I see Flash and Flash Jr." another spectator female this time calls out.

"His name is Speedy. Duh." Someone objects, clearly having heard her get that sidekick's name wrong.

"No, Speedy is Green Arrow's sidekick." Another, younger male, corrects.

"Well, that makes no sense." a fourth spectator quips. (And so agrees 90% of the people because seriously who came up with that dumb idea just name speedy something arrow based it's not that hard)

"Ready to see the inner sanctum?" Green Arrow asks Speedy a proud smile coming across his face.

"Born that way." Speedy says, with a minute glance back at his mentor. (OOF the accuracy!)

"I'm glad we're all here." Aqualad says, turning the conversation towards the two boys younger than himself and the one older than him.

"Have all six J.L. Sidekicks ever been at the same place at the same time?" Kid Flash questions, looking mostly towards Robin because despite the fact that he's the youngest, he would know.

"Don't call us Sidekicks," Speedy commands, practically growling the first words. "not after today."

Kid Flash smiles. "Sorry." he apologizes, seeming rather sincere.

"First time at the Hall. I'm a little overwhelmed." Kid replies with an excited smile.

"Your always overwhelmed kid, I bet that's even why it took you the longest to get here." Donna says stepping between the two boys.

"You can overwhelm me any time." Kid replies with a sleazy smile. Donna just rolled her eyes and stepped up flicking Kid in the ribs and walking past the two.

"I think I'm overwhelmed with lame you are." She called over her shoulder. Kid gritted his teeth and rubbed his rib with a groan.

Kara walked over a to kid with a mildly concerned look. "Are you okay Kid?" She said leaning down slightly looking at his side. Kid smiled at her genuine concern and was about to respond when.

"He's fine Supergirl, just a little overwhelmed!" Donna said looking back them and earning a chuckle from Wonder Woman.

"Right!" Supergirl stood back up with a slight blush. Superman walked over and put his hand on her shoulder while motioning for them go to keep walking.

"You're all overwhelmed, Freeze was underwhelmed. Why isn't anybody ever just whelmed?" Robin asks as they walk through the doors. "Oh." he manages, staring up at the statues of the golden statues of the founding Justice League members.

"Maybe that's why." He mutters quickly still in awe of the golden figures.

They arrive at a large door with AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY written on it. It slides open, revealing Martian Manhunter and Red Tornado, a human-sized red robot. The two Heroes step out of the hallway and into where the Cameras can see them.

"Robin, Speedy, Wonder Girl, Aqualad, Kid Flash, Super Girl." he lists them off in order, his voice calm but monotonic and formal. "welcome." then he turns around, leading them inside. The two leading protéges, Robin and Kid Flash, fist bump with each other as they begin to follow him. All the sidekicks except Speedy seem pleased.

"You now have unlimited access to the gym, our fully stocked gallery, and of course our library." The league members led the group of sidekicks around the hall. Towards the end of the tour they made one last stop. The door opens revealing a massive library with a giant computer and extensive amounts of books. Flash turns back to the group of teens.

"Make yourselves at home." he says with a grand gesture and a smile. Robin and Kid Flash literally jump into their chairs, while Aqualad calmly takes the one across from them. Speedy, however, remains standing. Looking directly at the mentors.

"Quick debrief to discuss the coincidence of several Ice Villains attacking on the same day." Batman then turns to the teens. Kid and Robin took seats while Aqua lad and Wonder girl stood at attention. Meanwhile Supergirl seemed to be far more interested in the libraries books.

"We shouldn't be long." Then he turns to another door, and a fisheye camera pops out.

"Recognize:

Superman; 0-1

Batman; 0-2,

Wonder Woman; 0-3

Aquaman; 0-6,

Flash; 0-4,

Green Arrow; 0-8,

Martian Manhunter; 0-7,

Red Tornado; 1-6."

The door behind the camera illuminates before opening reading out JUSTICE LEAGUE MEMBERS ONLY. But before the league members could walk through they were cut off.

"That's it?" Speedy demands his anger and volume catching all of their attention instantly. "You promised a real look inside, not a glorified backstage pass." he crosses his arms since his eyes can't show his emotions as he has lenses in his mask.

"It's a first step." Aquaman speaks up, though calmly. "You've been granted access few others get."

"Oh, really?" he questions, gesturing up to a group of people taking pictures on the other side of soundproof glass. "Who cares which side of the glass we're on?"

"Roy, you just need to be patient." Green Arrow tries, even using his Sidekick's civilian name to attempt to get through to the teenager.

"What I need is respect." Roy growls, before turning around to take a look at the other three protéges. Who are all still sitting down and not intervening in the conversation they were so obviously listening to.

"They're treating us like kids." he tries to speak directly to them. "Worse- like Sidekicks!" His anger is steadily growing but that one word makes it nearly double.

 "We deserve better than this."

All three exchange looks, Kid Flash looking to Robin, then to Aqualad, who exchanges a small glance to the both of them. Seeing their faces he looked over to Donna and Kara. Donna looked stern but questioning she seemed to somewhat agree with him. Super Girl seemed more startled than anything looking away when their eyes met.

Roy's voice drops. "You're kidding right?" Despite Speedy's words his fellow sidekicks don't object. "You're playing their game?" his anger is growing again. Worse this time. "Why?! Today was supposed to be the day, step one in becoming full-fledged members of the League."

"Well, sure," Kid Flash speaks up, looking to the other protéges. "But I thought step one was the tour of the HQ." He says, sitting up straighter and looking at the older teen.

"Except the Hall isn't the League's real HQ." Green Arrow looks mildly surprised, while Aquaman's eyes bug in shock. Not to mention all three protéges' mouths drop open, Kid Flash's in shock, Robin's paired with surprise and Aqualad has his accompanied with confusion.

"I bet they never told you it's just a false front for tourists." Green Arrows eyes went wide, but he looks less surprised in a shocked kind of way and more so like he can't believe his protége is telling this in front of the other boys and Leaguers. However, Aquaman's shock has fades and as he takes one look at Green Arrow he calms entirely.

"And a pit stop for catching Zeta-beam teleporter-tubes to the real thing,"Speedy gestures up with his right hand in indication for his next words. Supergirl sends a questioning look at Clark while Donna crosses her arms.

"An orbiting satellite called the Watchtower."

Green Arrows turns, showing off Batman's glare, which is probably what got him to turn towards the Dark Knight in the first place. "I know, I know, but I thought we could make an exception." Batman continues to glare. "Or not."

Aquaman steps up slightly. "You're not helping your cause here, son. Stand down or…" He says trying to calm the situation.

"Or what?" he demands. "You'll send me to my room? And I'm not your son!" Speedy snaps then turns to Green Arrow.

"I'm not even his." his anger seems to die out as he speaks again. "I thought I was his partner, but not anymore." emphasizing his point by taking off the canary-yellow hat and throwing it to the ground. All the protéges can only watch in wide-eyed shock.

"Guess they were right about you." Roy comments as he walks between the three who stand up in an attempt to either say something or physically get in his way. "You're not ready." with that they all watch as he leaves the library.

They can't sit on it for long, an alarm begins blaring from the computer. Turning they find a call Superman answers it on the screen.

"Mr Terrific to Justice League." Mr Terrific one of the leuges best minds and scientist appears on the screen.

"There has been an explosion at Project Cadmus. It's on fire." The Justice League members all step up to the computer. "I've had my suspicions about Cadmus. This may present the perfect opportunity to in-" Batman begins but is cut as another alarm comes through.

"Zatara to Justice League." this time the Magician shows up on a small screen in the lower right-hand corner. "The sorcerer Wotan is using the Amulet of Attan to blot out the Sun." now he has their full attention. "Requesting full League response."

"Terrific?" Batman questions. (do you really need to ask; no Sun means no Earth!)

"It's a small fire." The big blue boy scout assures. "Local authorities have it under control." He confirmed quickly.

"Then Cadmus can wait." the Dark Knight states, then presses a key on the massive keyboard below. "All Leaguers rendezvous at Zatara's coordinates. Batman out." Turning to the group of sidekicks Batman's voice somehow lowers even further.

"Stay put." Batman states, barely even looking at them before he gives his order.

"What?" Robin questions, shocked. "Why?"

"This is a League mission." Aquaman says.

"You're not trained to-" Flash tries to continue but Wally cuts him off.

"Since when?" Kid Flash demands mere moments after the last syllable leaves his mentor's mouth. Even Wally seams a little outraged by the decision.

"We've trained to be warriors, to help people. I have trained in combat since the moment I could walk and swing a blade!" Donna says but as Wonder girl speaks her gaze shifts between each of the league members. Seeing Donna's growing frustration Diana stepped forward placing a calming hand on her shoulder.

"Please sister allow him to finish." Wonder Woman says which seems to pacify Donna for now.

Flash steps forward while clearing his throat "Ahem… what I meant was that you're not trained to work as a part of this team." he says, gesturing to the other two mentors beside him and in extension, the computer with Zatara still showing.

"There will be other missions when you're ready." Aquaman states calmly crossing his orange covered arms.

Supergirl who has been quiet this whole time stares at Superman clearly upset. However she talks quietly to her cousin.

"B-but today w-was supposed t-to be the d-day?" She says shyly almost too timid to talk at all.

"Don't worry you'll get your chance." He says reassuringly to her.

"O-oh o-okay." She said voice still small. Now with everyone's attention on them Batman cuts in.

"But for now, stay put." Batman glares at the end to accent his point. The screen turns fully black behind him, making his lenses pop even more.

All the sidekicks look sad, but as their mentors walk away anger comes over their faces.

"Glad you didn't bring those two?" Green Arrow asks Martian Manhunter with a small tease in his tone.

"Indeed." the alien agrees rapidly.

They walk in behind Aquaman, Batman, and Flash, but Red Tornado looks at them for a moment before following. Then the door closes.

Kid Flash scoffs. "When we're ready?" he questions, looking between the two beside him.

"How are we ever supposed to be ready when they treat us like," Kid asks animatedly, stepping forward and throwing his hands up, before turning around and glaring up at Aqualad. "like Sidekicks." he too growls out the term that they are typically referred to as.

"My mentor, my King, I thought he trusted me." Aqualad says sadly.

"Trust?" Kid Flash questions sarcastically. "They don't even trust us with the basics!" he points out the obvious.

"I thought that the princess truly believed I was ready to join the greatest warriors on earth instead this is just another trial!" Donna said with venom tightening her balled fists.

"They've got a secret HQ in Space!" Wally shouted into the air.

"What else aren't they telling us?" Aqualad questions, voicing what they're all thinking.

Robin sighs and speaks "I have a better question: Why didn't we leave with Speedy?" Kid Flash crosses his arms and looks down, annoyed, while Aqualad looks also down sadly. Donna now with a visible frown walks over to a wall and leans on it arms crossed. Super Girl still looks awkwardly at the floor while grabbing one of her arms. (Think the Vegeta broken arm pose.)

"What is Project Cadmus?" Aqualad asked slowly suspicion filling his voice.

"Don't know," Robin admits, then grins/smirks. "but I can find out." he walks over to the computer, instantly typing out codes and searching for information.

The computer buzzes "Access Denied" The automated voice states.

Robin laughs. "Wanna bet?" hitting a few more buttons before he starts looking through codes of the files at near lightspeed.

"Whoa." Kid Flash murmurs surprised. "How are you doing that." Robin smiles as he hits two more keys.

"Same system as the Batcave." And with that he hits one last key.

"Access Granted." The voice states. Showing a two-story complex and all the data showing up around it.

"Alright. Project Cadmus." he states simply. "Genetics lab here in DC." then he frowns. "That's all there is, but if Batman's suspicious…" He glances at Aqualad, "maybe we should investigate." then turns to Kid Flash.

"We can prove our skills as warriors!" Donna said pushing off the wall and starting to smile.

"Solve their case before they do." Aqualad gives a small smile as well. "It would be poetic justice."

"Hey." Robin manages through his chuckle. "They're all about justice."

Aqualad sighs. "But they said to stay put."

"For the blotting out the sun mission, not this." Robin says, smiling and putting his hands on his hips.

"Wait." the speedster starts, grabbing the younger's shoulder and turning him towards him.

"Are- are you going to Cadmus?" he uses his finger pointing skills to emphasize.

"Because if you're going, I'm going!" both boys turn to Aqualad smiling, Robin utterly beaming, and Kid Flash with a dash of hope in his.

"U-umm I'm not so sure about this. I mean. If we don't listen to them. Won't they like. I don't know. Not let us into the league maybe?" Stuttered out Supergirl she had been completely quiet the whole time. She was the most awkward as Robin, Kid Flash, Aqualad, Speedy, and Wonder Girl had all met before. The only one she was vaguely acquainted with was Donna aka Wonder Girl. The two had become friends but they still hadn't spoken that much compared to the others who knew each other for years. Donna approach Kara and calmly put a hand on her shoulder.

"We need to do this Kara. We need to prove that we can take care of ourselves in a mission. Didn't you tell me that you found Superman's constant presence somewhat smothering? Take this chance to prove he doesn't have to watch you all the time." Donna gave her a small speech. Amazons were great warriors but they were also negotiators and diplomats, after all it takes more than swords and fists to keep peace. And the greatest negotiator of all those warrior women was Diana. She could change people's hearts and minds, motivate any ally, and negotiate with any enemy. So it was a given growing up as Wonder Woman's little sister it was almost guaranteed Donna would pick up a thing or two. But unlike her sister Donna's principals weren't so firmly developed and using those skills to manipulate a friend wasn't fully beneath her. (Basically she's a gaslighting magical girl. 🤣)

Kara hearing Donna's motivating or manipulating words depending on your perspective gave an affirming nod.

"And just like that We're a team on a mission." Said Aqualad with a confident smile.

"We didn't come for a play-date." Aqualad joins his with a look of pure determination.

[Cadmus, unknown Sub level]

Finally Hybrid could hear and smell it with his enhanced senses. The Cadmus fire had started and the day of freedom was at hand. He and his main conspirators had been carful to gather everything he would need. He left the current floor briefcase of evidence in hand. Everything he could collect on his files from Cadmus as well as so much more. Details on project Kr, Olympus, and even block buster. Coming out of the elevator, he said a brief goodbye to his compatriot. Then he walked through a concrete hallway passing by marching G-trolls and G-nomes he transformed as he entered a lab. At its center Dr Desmond worked on surrounded by G-dwarves. Hybrid now in the form of Guardian and walked over to the doctor.

"Dr you called for me?" He said voice perfectly mimicking the real Guardian thanks to his changed vocal cords.

"What no I-" before he could get any further in refuting Hybrid entered his mind. The g-gnome on his shoulder tried to interfere but hybrid had the raw strength of the second most talented Martian of all time. And so he stopped the little g-gnome and did the telepathic equivalent of telling it to shut the duck up and wrapped its mouth in duck tape.

"O-Oh yes here quickly take all of these samples of project block buster." Desmond turned around taking out all the of doses of the project block buster formula. After a few minutes of placing them and handing them over in black boxes ment to hold 10 vials each. Some were better quality than others but it didn't matter to him. So long as he kept the best ones for himself it was fine.

When he was finally done he left one for Dr Desmond to use later in order to keep the plot on track. When he walked out he breathed a sigh of relief. Heading back down the hall he planed to go down to sub level 53 and get comic Superboy and Match who had been given pods on that floor. Then they would head up to sub level 52 and wait for the team to find the first super boy. All was going according to plan. At least until he rounded a corner and met face to face with Guardian while Hybrid was still disguised as Guardian.

"Well fuck, this is awkward."
