Wicked Justice

Chapter 2: Thank you

I jolted awake, my head pounding from a headache, my chest heaving as I looked around the room, trying to figure out where I was. The room was unfamiliar, with soft lighting, warm tones, anime posters on the walls, and the faint scent of fresh girls perfume.

This… looks like a girl's room.

"Where am I?"

My thoughts raced as I sat up, trying to piece together what had happened. My body felt heavy like I'd been asleep for days. As I moved, I felt something strange in my hand—soft and squishy.

I froze.

Someone was lying under the bed sheets. After uncovering who was under the sheet, I realized it was the girl from the bridge. Then, I realized that my hand was placed on her boob.

Oh no… oh no, no, no!

My heart nearly exploded as my mind screamed at me.

"OH CRAP!"

I yelled, yanking my hand back so fast I lost my balance. The next thing I knew, I was tumbling off the bed. My back hit the floor with a loud thud, sending a sharp jolt of pain through me.

"Ugh!"

I groaned, clutching my back. My breaths came quick and shallow as I tried to recover.

"What the hell is going on? What am I doing here? And why the hell was I…?!"

Before I could gather my thoughts, I heard a startled gasp.

Her.

She sat up, her wide, alarmed eyes locking onto mine.

"What the hell is wrong with you?!" she snapped, her voice sharp and shaking with fear and confusion.

I scrambled to my feet, my hands raised in surrender.

"Who are you? What's going on? Where am I?" I blurted, the words spilling out faster than I could think.

Her expression softened slightly, but her tone stayed firm, tinged with irritation.

"Seriously? You're the one freaking out? I'm the one who saved you! I almost died doing it!"

I backed away a little, still trying to make sense of everything. My heart was pounding in my chest, my face burning with embarrassment. I avoided looking directly at her, scratching the back of my head nervously.

"Okay… okay, sorry for freaking out like that," I muttered, my voice low. "It's just… waking up in a strange place next to a girl I don't even know? That's kinda terrifying, you know?"

She raised an eyebrow, clearly unconvinced.

"Terrifying? I think you're forgetting I'm the one who found you dangling off a bridge. You're lucky I pulled you out of the water, or you'd be dead right now."

I winced, the memory of the bridge crashing back into my mind.

"Wait… so, we didn't—"

"No," she interrupted, rolling her eyes. "We didn't die. But I have no idea how we're still alive. One second, I grab your leg to stop you from jumping, and the next, we fall together. And then… well, I don't know what happened. We hit the water, but it didn't feel real. It was like something stopped us from hitting it too hard."

I started, trying to remember. The fall… the system. That voice.

[System activation commencing. Would you like to be chosen for a second chance?]

The memory sent chills down my spine.

"You… saved me," I said, my voice softer this time.

She nodded, her expression unreadable.

"Yeah. Stupid of me, huh?" She let out a small, bitter laugh. "But I couldn't just stand there and let you throw your life away."

I stared at her, the words stuck in my throat. I was still processing everything, trying to understand what was happening.

"Thank you... I'm sorry I put you in this trouble," I muttered, my voice barely above a whisper. My chest tightened as the weight of everything hit me.

She raised an eyebrow, looking at me with disbelief and frustration.

"Trouble? You're the one who nearly threw yourself off a bridge," she said, her tone softening just a little. "You don't need to apologize for that... Just don't do something like that again, okay?"

I nodded, unable to find anything else to say. I was still in shock, still trying to make sense of it all. The girl had saved my life, but I couldn't shake the feeling that this whole thing was just the beginning.

I took a deep breath, trying to calm myself, and realized something. We hadn't even introduced ourselves.

"Wait… we haven't even introduced ourselves properly," I said, trying to break the tension. "I'm Kai."

She blinked and then gave a small nod.

"Tessa."

I raised an eyebrow.

"Tessa... that's an interesting name."

She shrugged.

"It's my name. Don't wear it out."

I chuckled nervously, feeling a bit lighter now that we had at least exchanged names. But deep down, I knew things were far from normal. Whatever this second chance was, it wasn't over yet.

"So, uh… what now?" I asked, shifting on the bed and rubbing my temples. "I mean, after everything that happened?"

Tessa sighed, her eyes narrowing slightly.

"We will figure this out. But first, you need to promise me no more bridges, Kai."

I couldn't help but smile at the irony of it all.

"Yeah. No more bridges."

Tessa glanced at the clock on the wall, her eyes widening. "Crap, I'm late!"

She jumped up from the bed, her movements quick and frantic.

"I need to go to work, like, right now!"

I watched as she hurried around the room, tossing things into a bag and pulling on a jacket. She was moving so fast that I could barely keep up with her.

"Hey, wait! We still have more to talk about. Like... am I staying here because I have nowhere to go?" I asked, standing up as she zipped up her bag.

She paused for a second, looking at me with a tired but determined expression.

"I'm already late. I'll explain later. Just… stay here, alright? Don't do anything stupid while I'm gone."

"Yeah, yeah, I got it," I muttered, watching her rush toward the door.

She glanced back at me before opening it.

"See you later, Kai. Try not to break anything, okay?"

And just like that, she was gone. The door clicked shut behind her, leaving me in the quiet room, alone.

I stood there for a moment, still trying to wrap my head around everything. What was happening? What was the point of all this? The whole situation felt like a dream I couldn't wake up from.

With a sigh, I plopped back down on the bed, staring up at the ceiling. What now?
