Chapter 9: The Hunt for Answers

Jin Soo moved quietly through the forest, his mind sharp and focused. The warmth of the sunset was gone, replaced by the chill of the night air. Kira kept close, alert and ready.

"Alright, Kira," Jin Soo said, glancing around. "We need to find more creatures. We need info on how to use these stones." He gripped the stones in his pocket tightly. They were heavy, but he liked the weight—they reminded him of his mission.

The owl had made it clear: nature could teach them, but they had to earn it. No more wandering aimlessly. They needed a plan.

"I want to find that badger we saw earlier," he said, recalling the small creature that had scurried past them. "Those things know the forest well." Kira nodded and sniffed the air, eager to help.

They walked in silence, keeping their eyes peeled for movement. Jin Soo felt the tension in the air, a mix of excitement and determination. He had no time for distractions. Protecting the forest was more than just a goal; it was now personal.

After some time, they reached the edge of a thicket. Shadows moved between the trees, and Kira's ears perked up. "There!" Jin Soo whispered, pointing.

The badger appeared, its snout low as it sniffed the ground. It didn't notice them at first. Jin Soo took a step forward, trying to be as stealthy as possible.

"Hey," he said, his voice low but firm. The badger's head snapped up, its eyes wide as it searched for the source of the sound.

"Easy," Jin Soo said, raising his hands slightly. "We need to talk. We want to help the forest, but we need your guidance."

The badger studied him, then relaxed a little. "You think you can help? Many have tried, and few have succeeded." Its voice was gruff, matching the creature's rugged appearance.

"We're not like the others," Jin Soo replied with confidence. "We have these stones. We're ready to put in the work."

The badger tilted its head. "Stones alone won't protect the forest. You must understand the balance. What do you know about the threats?"

Jin Soo frowned. "Not much. But I know there's danger. I've felt it." He looked directly at the badger, searching for seriousness in its eyes. "What can you tell me?"

"A lot of things have changed," the badger said, lowering its voice. "The forest has enemies. People who don't care about nature. They take and take, and we don't have enough to fight back. If you want to help, you need to learn."

"We're listening," Jin Soo said.

"Fine," the badger continued. "Start by observing. Watch the flow of the forest. Pay attention to what's being taken and where. The signs are everywhere."

"Got it," Jin Soo replied, taking mental notes. "Anything else?"

"Use your stones wisely. They amplify emotions. Channel your intentions clearly." The badger eyed him closely, gauging his resolve. "You screw that up, and you'll make things worse."

"I won't screw it up," Jin Soo replied, steel in his voice. "I want to protect this place."

The badger snorted, unimpressed. "Talk is cheap. Show me you mean it."

With that, the badger turned and began to move deeper into the forest. Jin Soo followed closely, Kira right beside him, ready for whatever came next.

As they walked, the badger led them to a clearing filled with signs of disturbance. Trees had been cut down, and the ground was torn up by heavy machinery. Jin Soo's stomach churned.

"This is what I'm talking about," the badger said. "This is the threat. You can't just sit back and watch. You need to act."

Jin Soo clenched his fists, anger bubbling up inside him. "What do we do?"

"First, gather information," the badger instructed. "Find out who's responsible. Then, we plan."

"Okay," Jin Soo said, taking a deep breath to steady himself. "I can do that."

"Good," the badger replied, a glimmer of respect in its eyes. "But be careful. Not everyone will welcome your help."

"I know." Jin Soo met the badger's gaze, determination clear on his face. "I'm ready."

With a shared understanding, they stood in the ruined clearing, the weight of their mission sinking in. Jin Soo knew there was no turning back now. He was going to fight, and he was going to protect this forest—no matter what it took.
