In the Council Building, within the Councilor's Office.
With her back to the window, Mel raised her head from her desk, glancing at the
mountain of documents piled up, feeling increasingly frustrated.
Problems in Piltover were piling up one after another, and troubles from Zaun were
emerging constantly.
Since the attack during the memorial service, families and workshops in Piltover had
been sending documents and formal letters. The tone remained polite as always, but
it was essentially about holding her accountable.
Traffic was disrupted, shipments were delayed.
The market was unstable, prices were unmanageable.
The chaotic situation led to sudden price hikes for raw materials.
A plethora of issues revolving around money seemed to suggest that not earning a few
gold coins was akin to taking their lives.
Yes, Piltover was indeed on the edge of turmoil now, but these people weren't just
unhelpful; they were making things worse.
Even her insistence on reinstating the evaluation committee had faced considerable
dissent lately.
What a bunch of idiots!
To achieve a stable society, a stable market, and smooth transportation, it was
essential for the people of Piltover to see that the council had the determination,
confidence, and decisiveness to resolve current issues and restore their faith in the
council.
Only then could more forces be mobilized to tackle these problems and deal with
Zaun.
Fortunately, she had contacted the Freljord family, who were willing to help.
Otherwise, she truly didn't know how long she would be troubled by this.
With her thoughts in disarray, Mel tossed her pen aside and stood up abruptly,
shouting: "Elyora! Elyora?"
"If you're looking for Elyora, she's still at the Medarda Manor assisting the enforcers
with your bedroom theft case." A mysterious voice that was hard to determine
whether male or female sounded from behind Mel just as she turned around fiercely
with a paper cutter in hand.
However, there was nothing behind her; only a large floor-to-ceiling window
overlooking all of Piltover had an unexpected gap through which a cool breeze flowed
in.
"Why are you so impatient, Ms. Mel Medarda?"
The voice echoed again from behind her. Mel tightened her grip on the cutter and
turned around expressionlessly. "A person who barges in without warning has no right
to say that to me."
"Alright, I apologize!"
Link stood opposite Mel with his hands raised. However, Mel frowned. "You're... that
guy from the memorial service."
"To be remembered by a distinguished councilor is truly a stroke of luck!" Link teased
with a smile. Mel relaxed her grip on the cutter slightly but still spoke with discontent.
"Even if you helped Piltover prevent the attack during the memorial service, your
hidden motives are unclear; who knows what you're really after?"
"Wow, suspicion from a councilor truly makes me feel uneasy," Link remarked as he
glanced at the paper cutter in Mel's hand. "But you don't need to be so tense."
"Rather than focusing on my intentions, you should examine your own troubles more
closely."
"My troubles?" Mel snorted. "Thanks for your reminder."
"If there were fewer people like you around, perhaps I'd have it much easier."
"Mel, taking out your anger on others isn't wise; it will cause you to lose potential
allies." Link placed his hand on the table before him; his fingers sank silently into its
surface. This made Mel's pupils contract slightly. Yet even so, she retorted defiantly:
"Is this supposed to be a threat?"
"This is merely a little trick to help you calm down; it doesn't count as a threat."
Link withdrew his fingers calmly and said: "I know you're quite troubled right now."
"The threat from Zaun is like a thorn in your back; your mother's covetousness is
unsettling; the people of Piltover are divided; various troubles keep surfacing."
"However—" Link paused. "You'd best pay more attention to yourself; the trouble
you've stirred up is far more serious than these issues."
"I've stirred up trouble?" Mel frowned in confusion. "What do you mean?"
"Do you remember how you and Jayce survived the explosion?"
Link's words left Mel silent; apart from anger and hatred regarding the explosion
incident, she also felt deep confusion within herself. Along with these emotions came
subtle changes happening within her body.
"What do you know?" Mel directly questioned Link. He sighed and replied: "If you
want answers, your current attitude isn't friendly."
"You came looking for me." Mel shot back without hesitation. Link helplessly
responded: "That's because I was sent here by someone else."
"Who? My mother!" Mel immediately thought of her mother. Link shook his head. "No,
your mother is part of it too."
"My mother is part of it too?" Mel was taken aback; her first reaction was that this
mysterious person came from Noxus. But soon after, she dismissed this guess—if it
were someone from Noxus, they wouldn't have acted during the memorial service;
they would have exacerbated things instead.
So who exactly are they?
And who sent him or her here?
"The merchant Amara from Piltover's commerce guild—I believe she's dead now,
right?"
At this moment, Link mentioned a name that surprised Mel. She frowned and asked:
"Why bring this up?"
"Aren't you curious about how Amara died?"
"It wasn't due to an undercity assassin..." Mel suddenly fell silent. Link chuckled:
"What's this? Are we turning tables now?"
"You mean my mother—" Mel started to speak when Link calmly suggested: "Why not
ask your mother directly?"
"Ask her why Amara approached her and what led her to kill Amara!"
Upon hearing this, Mel's eyes widened as her pupils constricted sharply; the paper
cutter in her hand clattered onto the floor.
"How can this be? My mother had no reason..."
"The reason Amara died at your mother's hands is precisely where your troubles stem
from," Link said cautiously. "To be honest, this isn't an appropriate place for such
discussions—those guys are everywhere and wield powers that Piltover today cannot
defend against."
"If you want to uncover the truth and understand why it happened best go see your
mother."
"Can she withstand all of this?" Mel asked. Link shook his head. "No, but she can
serve as bait for me to buy time to escape."
Mel's face twitched slightly as Link lightly tapped on the table. "Alright then—are we
going or not? Give me an answer."
Mel pondered for a moment before gritting her teeth and saying: "I'll go!"
"Then let's go! I'm not slow; we'll reach there quickly."
Link pulled out a breathing mask while extending his hand toward Mel.
"I hope you can endure a bit of turbulence!"
Mel stared at the breathing mask in Link's hand and then looked at him clad in armor
before gritting her teeth and walking over.
...
In just fifteen minutes after rushing from the council building to Piltover's dock with
Mel's help, Link arrived at Ambessa's meeting room aboard a warship.
However, Mel didn't look too good; Link's speed was too fast—it made her feel
extremely uncomfortable.
Moreover, crossing over the city directly from above felt terrible.
"I must be out of my mind for actually following your advice," Mel muttered under her
breath while walking ahead of Link. "Taking a carriage would have been much more
comfortable than being carried by you across rooftops."
"But that would be riskier!" One sentence from Link silenced Mel as she approached
her mother's meeting room with an expression fluctuating between anger and
uncertainty. Ambessa simply donned a bathrobe hastily while still damp from steam.
Clearly, Link and Mel's sudden arrival forced her to cut short her bath for their
meeting.
"Look who it is—my daughter!" Ambessa poured herself a cup of hot tea from a kettle.
"Earlier you glared at me like an angry cat warning me not to overstep my bounds—
what brings you here so suddenly today?"
Ambessa lifted her teacup while glancing at Link behind Mel. "Hmm, you've brought
an interesting companion along."
"Let's hear it—what's going on?"
"Mother, it's not me who came here," Mel stated sharply causing Ambessa's
movements to pause as she shifted her gaze from her teacup to Link. At that moment
near the door, Rek'thos stood up quietly behind Link.
"Ms. Medarda!" As soon as Link spoke up both Mel and Ambessa turned their
attention towards him.
Seeing their reaction made Link chuckle lightly. "I'm addressing this experienced Ms.
Medarda here."
Mel rolled her eyes indignantly while Ambessa looked curiously at Link's exoskeleton
armor before saying: "I'm quite interested in your equipment; if you're here to sell
something—you've come to just the right person."
"I happen to need a batch of weapons—ones capable of arming soldiers!"
"Well then," Link nodded but quickly continued: "What I'm curious about is whether
General Ambessa wants weapons for aiding Piltover or—"
"—to defend against the Black Rose?"
As soon as those words left his mouth, an icy atmosphere enveloped the cabin.
