Chapter 420: Chapter 420: The Third Hokage is in Big Trouble
When news spreads that either a ninja village assassinated their own country's daimyo, or that the daimyo deliberately framed the leader of the ninja village, it becomes a scandal that brings shame to both parties. Without a clear arrest or solid evidence, both sides would naturally point fingers at the enemy.
"It must have been done by Hiruzen," the daimyo muttered, his lean face twisting with anger at the mere mention of Sarutobi Hiruzen's name.
Despite his efforts, no solid evidence had surfaced regarding the assassination attempt on his life. The reports concluded that rogue and missing-nin were responsible, but the daimyo refused to accept it. He had hired people to dig deeper, and those informants swore it couldn't have been wandering ninjas. Why would someone with that kind of power take such a risk?
Ordinary rogue ninjas were too busy hiding from pursuit to carry out such high-profile assassinations. The idea of someone attacking a daimyo without a larger organization backing them—like the Akatsuki—made no sense.
When Konoha delivered a group of so-called "culprits," the daimyo quickly realized it was a farce, meant to placate him. The assassins were nobodies, and it was clear to him that Konoha had staged the entire thing.
To the daimyo, the most likely suspect was none other than the Third Hokage himself. The motive was clear: scare him into submission.
Being forced to flee to Konoha for safety was the ultimate humiliation for the daimyo, and his grudge against Sarutobi Hiruzen had only deepened.
Meanwhile, Konoha was in chaos.
A large crowd of anti-war villagers and ninjas had gathered in front of the Hokage's office building, protesting against the war. Unlike previous protests that fizzled out by nightfall, this one persisted. When one group grew tired, another replaced them, creating a constant wave of unrest.
Faced with mounting public anger, the Hokage's office was at a loss. Attempts to issue calming announcements were met with indifference, and the protesters showed no sign of dispersing.
The Third Hokage, Sarutobi Hiruzen, was left with no choice but to endure the humiliation. For now, all he could do was ride out the storm.
While Hiruzen struggled with the situation, Shinki was relatively unaffected. He spent his time resting at home or managing minor tasks at the ANBU base. Protests didn't concern ANBU unless they involved spies or sabotage, so Shinki had little to worry about.
Instead, it was the police force that bore the brunt of the unrest. Uchiha police officers had to maintain order, prevent riots, and ensure the safety of the protesters, leaving them exhausted. Fortunately for Uchiha Mikoto, her role was mostly administrative, and she didn't have to patrol the streets.
In the ANBU headquarters, Hatake Sakumo entered Shinki's office with a scroll in hand.
"Sir, this is some sensitive information gathered by my subordinates. There might be enemy spies operating within the village," Sakumo reported, bowing respectfully as he placed the scroll on the desk.
Shinki picked up the scroll, waving off Sakumo's formality. "Senior, you don't need to be so formal in my office."
Sakumo nodded but remained standing stiffly, his respect unwavering. Shinki sighed, knowing there was no point in pressing further.
Sakumo's dedication to ANBU was impressive. Despite his relatively short tenure, he had already completed more missions than most captains. His efficiency and strength earned him admiration from his peers, and many believed he would soon be promoted to squadron leader.
As Shinki opened the scroll and skimmed its contents, his casual demeanor shifted. He sat upright, eyes narrowing in focus.
"Senior, is this information accurate?"
"Yes, without a doubt," Sakumo confirmed.
After rereading the scroll, Shinki suddenly slapped the desk and burst into laughter.
"Hahaha! It seems our dear Hokage-sama is in for even more trouble. This is truly adding insult to injury!"
Sakumo's expression behind his mask turned awkward.
"Sir… is it really appropriate to laugh at Hokage-sama's misfortune?"
Shinki waved a hand dismissively. "The anti-war protests are already giving him enough grief, and now rumors are spreading that the Third Hokage and the Shimura clan have been embezzling village funds to enrich themselves. Talk about bad timing!"
He leaned back in his chair, still chuckling. "Our Hokage-sama was probably still brainstorming ways to appease the villagers and convince them to support the war. Now, with these accusations circulating, his troubles just keep piling up."
The rumors had spread quickly, and the accusations were damning: Sarutobi Hiruzen and the Shimura clan had allegedly misappropriated public funds for personal gain. The claims resonated with the already disgruntled villagers, adding fuel to the protests.
Sakumo hesitated. "My lord, is there any truth to these accusations?"
Shinki's grin widened. "Truth? Well, let's just say there's likely more fact than fiction here."
He leaned forward, resting his elbows on the desk. "Our Hokage-sama has always had a knack for looking good on the surface while keeping a few skeletons in the closet. Honestly, this couldn't have come at a better time. If it weren't for appearances, I would've helped spread these rumors myself."
He neatly rolled up the scroll and placed it back on his desk. "We've seen nothing, and we'll act on this later—after it's had time to stew."
Sakumo understood immediately. The ANBU wouldn't act on the rumors just yet. Allowing the news to spread unchecked would increase public discontent and put more pressure on the Third Hokage.
"Yes, sir," Sakumo replied, leaving Shinki to his musings.
As the door closed, Shinki chuckled to himself. The more trouble Hiruzen faces, the better.
