Sato stepped into the Battle Tower slowly.
Being an unknown trainer, his entrance caused no ripple in the bustling and lively scene outside. His presence was like a drop of water falling into the sea, unnoticed.
With most people rushing outside to catch a glimpse of Cynthia, the first floor of the Battle Tower was now empty.
Aside from a receptionist occasionally peeking outside, Sato was the only person there.
"Hello, sir. How can I assist you today?"
Betty, the front desk receptionist, was desperately tempted to run outside and ask for Cynthia's autograph. But for the sake of her monthly attendance bonus and the newly launched makeup collection she had her eyes on, she suppressed the urge.
Spotting someone approaching, she quickly straightened up, put on a professional smile, and greeted him.
The visitor was a handsome young man with a chiseled face and sharp looks. Although his plain black hair hadn't been styled, his deep, obsidian-like eyes and the natural, confident aura of a strong trainer that he carried made Betty's heart race involuntarily.
"Hello, beautiful. I'd like to register as a participant in the Battle Tower. Here's my temporary ID. Please help me with the process. If possible, I'd like to arrange a Pokémon battle for tonight," Sato politely said with a small smile.
Noticing the young receptionist blush at the sight of him, Sato found it a bit amusing but didn't dwell much on it. He directly stated his intentions and placed his temporary ID and four PokéBalls on the counter, offering a soft smile in the process.
Indeed, Sato had only brought four Pokémon for this registration: Nidoran, Growlithe, Marshtomp, and a shiny Wingull.
This selection was intentional.
Sato wanted to complete the daunting task of achieving 10 consecutive victories as quickly as possible.
The Battle Tower offered a system called the Power Rating Evaluation, which assessed a trainer's team based on the Pokémon they registered.
The evaluation provided a rough estimate of combat power, allowing skilled trainers to skip lower floors and save time climbing the tower.
Currently, Sato had two Pokémon at Level 30 and the rest above Level 20. Based on the guidebook for LaRousse City, which listed combat power benchmarks, he estimated his team's combat power to be around 2000.
(Note: Pokémon Level 30-40 = 500 power; Level 20-30 = 300 power; Level 10-20 = 100 power)
With a combat power of roughly 2000, Sato expected to start on the fourth floor, as each floor represented 500 power.
However, these benchmarks were official guidelines and not entirely accurate. A trainer and their Pokémon's combined battle strength often exceeded these numbers due to their synergy and strategies.
For this registration, Sato deliberately chose a more balanced team with 3 Pokémon above Level 20 and 1 above Level 10.
This brought his estimated combat power to around 1123, starting him on the third floor.
The Battle Tower's AI match-making system ensured battles were evenly matched, maintaining audience interest.
Overwhelmingly one-sided battles were boring and diminished the experience for spectators.
Sato knew that relying too heavily on his two Level 30 Pokémon would lead to uneven matchups, making battles either too easy or unwinnable depending on the opponents.
A balanced team was key to ensuring consistent performance and avoiding glaring weaknesses.
Aside from completing the 10-win streak challenge, Sato also wanted to use the Battle Tower as a training ground for his lower-tier Pokémon.
Unlike the games, where the Battle Tower didn't grant experience points, the battles in the tower naturally allowed both trainers and Pokémon to grow significantly through battles.
After a brief exchange, Betty, happy with Sato's polite demeanor and compliment, processed his registration efficiently.
In just two minutes, she handed him his Battle Tower participant card and scheduled his first match.
"Mr. Sato, here is your Battle Tower ID card. With this, you can freely access the contestants' resting areas and entry zones. Based on your combat power of 1123, you will start on the third floor. Your first battle is scheduled for 8:30 PM tonight. Please remember the time, and best of luck!" Betty said, battering her eyelashes slightly as she handed over a silver card.
"Thank you. I really appreciate it," Sato replied with a smile, collecting his items before heading toward the contestant-only elevator.
Upon reaching the third floor's waiting room, Sato waited patiently.
After about ten minutes, he heard his name announced over the broadcast. Guided by a staff member, he walked through the contestant tunnel and arrived at the battle arena.
The third-floor arena was modest, roughly half the size of a basketball court, with only a handful of spectators in the stands.
"So, this is where my journey in the Battle Tower begins. One day, I'll make sure these stands are packed with people cheering for me. Now that's the kind of life worth living, hahaha!" Sato muttered, a grin of excitement spreading across his face as he imagined the grand arenas he had seen on television.
Soon, his opponent appeared, and the two trainers faced off on the battlefield.
The referee, standing at the center, waved their flags impatiently, signaling the start of the battle.
"Come out, Marshtomp!"
"Crush them, Onix!"
With that, Sato and his opponent released their Pokémon. Marshtomp's sturdy form materialized on the field, facing the towering Onix. The 3-on-3 battle began.
Heavy thuds soon echoed across the arena as the battle raged on.
Two minutes later, Onix, now riddled with cracks, collapsed under Marshtomp's Ice Punch. The cold and unyielding Marshtomp stood atop Onix's cracked head.
Four minutes later, despite suffering multiple injuries, Marshtomp defeated a Breloom, slamming it into the cracked arena walls with icy mud-covered fists.
Five minutes later, the battlefield turned into a swampy mire. Marshtomp darted around gleefully, while a terrified Beautifly lay trembling in the mud.
In his debut Battle Tower match, Sato's Marshtomp delivered a devastating 3-0 sweep, ending the battle in dominant fashion.
As the stunned referee and audience watched in silence, Sato calmly returned Marshtomp and walked back through the contestant tunnel, not bothering to stick around for the referee's official announcement.
Moments later, applause and cheers erupted, echoing through the hallway.
