Chapter 725: Puppet
Victoria walked inside the bedchamber of her mother. And she put forth her dissatisfaction towards Joyce's freedom to her mother. "Mother, why doesn't anyone say anything to Joyce? She went outside the castle when it was already pitch dark outside."
"And what more, she brought some random woman to the castle as though we are here to do some charity work. Why isn't my brother stopping her? And why does father tolerate everything that she does? Is it because she is the Princess of a large Kingdom? Or is it because of something else that I am not seeing?"
Queen Consort Helena of Romania was in the middle of having some snacks by herself when her daughter barged into her room as if it was her own.
She looked at her agitated daughter with an unchanged expression on her face.
But the tone with which she questioned Victoria showed how she was fed up with this complaining behavior of her daughter, "Why are you so obsessed with your sister-in-law? Do you have no other hobbies than watching her every little action and complaining about it all day long?"
"Mother!" Victoria frowned and gave a betrayed look to her mother. "How can you take her side over your own daughter? Has that witch put every one of this castle under her charm or what?"
"Victoria!" Queen Consort Helena glared at her daughter. And she sternly said, "I will not tolerate such language towards this Kingdom's future Queen."
Victoria could only scoff when her mother was raising her voice at her because of Joyce.
And even though her mother looked really angry, she still tried to argue, "Did I say anything bad or untrue? She is a witch, she calls herself a witch. So, why is it so wrong when I address her using that word?"
The Queen Consort kept on glaring at her daughter while she replied to her, "Witch in itself isn't a bad word. But the way you tried to use it was degrading." Read exclusive adventures at empire
Helena then got up on her feet and made it clear, "And yes. I agree with you that she has put a charm on every one of us. But not with some spell, she did it with her actions."
Victoria wasn't letting go of that arrogant look on her face. So, Queen Consort chastised that ignorant Princess, "You always have tabs on where she goes and what she does, or who she brings into the castle. But have you ever wondered why she does that? Did you even try to learn what that 'random woman' had to go through and why Joyce took pity on her?"
The Princess didn't speak. She didn't know what had happened to the woman who Joyce brought in since she was too busy looking for ways to berate Joyce rather than trying to understand her action.
And after a few seconds of silence, Helena relayed the information to her daughter, "That woman was on the brink of death after an attempted murder by someone she knew. Joyce found her clinging to her life, and she even caught that criminal red-handed. And Joyce brought that woman here because she didn't have anyone. Do you think that letting our citizens die is good for our Kingdom?"
Victoria kept silent. And this time, her face showed a hint of guilt.
"His Majesty allows her to do what she wants to do without any restrictions because she uses her power for the welfare of his citizens. The good deeds that she is doing now will be reflected later when your brother becomes the King and she becomes the Queen."
Helena folded her arms and then asked her daughter in a little interrogative tone, "Now tell me, Victoria. Do you still think that a person of her caliber should be stopped?"
Instead of answering that question, Victoria looked at her mother with a sad look on her face and asked, "Why was I not taught to be like her?"
"You know that not everyone can learn the art of witchcraft, right? Only those from a few special bloodlines can do that," the Queen Consort answered in a little softer tone than before.
Victoria knitted her brows together and slightly tilted her head. And she softly mumbled after laboriously breathing in, "Mother, I am well aware that witches are born with powers in their blood. What I meant to say is that even without her magical powers, Joyce is too good to be true."
"She knows how to fight. She has vast knowledge about everything that someone would require to rule a Kingdom. She can do everything that a man can do. She is… she is too perfect for a Princess."
She lightly grabbed her gown and shared how she had been really feeling all this time, "And look at me… All I know are some etiquettes that a Princess needs to show in front of others, and how to act like a proper doll in front of men. Why wasn't I taught the things like her?"
It was now clear as the day why Victoria was so against Joyce, why she always looked at her with dislike.
Queen Consort Helena felt a slight sting in her heart after her daughter asked those questions. She could see the hurt in Victoria's eyes, and she could also see the jealousy.
And Helena could do nothing more than feel sorry for her daughter. "I am sorry that we didn't treat you as an equal of your brother. In fact, none of us women are treated as equal to men. Just look at me… I am nothing more than the wife of the King. The most I do is engage guests in some light talks if your father is busy. And that's it."
Victoria slightly looked up in order to contain her tears. She hated it that she was also going to be nothing more than a trophy wife to some Prince or King in the future, just like her mother.
She whispered after sniffling, "Sometimes, I wish that I was also born in Wyverndale. At least then, I wouldn't be a puppet for my whole life. I wish I could be as competent as her…"
And then she stormed out of her mother's chamber with a heavy heart.
