Chapter 404: Chapter 404: Yagura: If You Don’t Use the Knife That Comes to Your Door, It’s a Waste

The younger Raikage, Ay, was livid. His temper flared even hotter than his father's as soon as he heard of the Mist Village's response.

"Why are we wasting time? Let's go to war with them now!" he bellowed.

The Third Raikage gave his son a strange look. "How come you're even more hot-headed than me?"

To the Third Raikage, his fiery letter to the Mist Village was simply posturing—a common tactic he had used in the past against the Rock Village and the former Mizukage. Both had learned to ignore his bluster, recognizing it as a ploy for leverage rather than a genuine threat.

But the Third Raikage had underestimated Yagura.

Unlike the previous Mizukage, Yagura was freshly seated in power and faced internal challenges. His reign had yet to stabilize, with clans like the Kaguya, Yuki, and Hozuki harboring resentment. A perceived threat from the Cloud Village was the perfect opportunity for Yagura to consolidate his authority.

In other words, the Third Raikage's taunt wasn't just heard—it was welcomed.

Yagura's Response

When the Third Raikage's letter arrived at the Mist Village, Yagura was in a meeting with his mentor. He paused, reading the letter twice, and then broke into a cold laugh.

"It seems the highland barbarian hasn't changed one bit," Yagura said, his tone dripping with amusement.

His mentor sighed heavily, recognizing trouble brewing. While he wanted to advise restraint, he also understood that Yagura needed to assert his authority.

"Master, I've decided. The Kaguya, Yuki, and Hozuki clans will be deployed to the disputed sea. What do you think?"

The mentor raised an eyebrow but didn't object. He knew what this meant. Yagura wasn't just responding to external threats—he was also eliminating internal dissent. By sending these rival clans to the front lines, Yagura was ensuring they bore the brunt of any conflict, weakening their ability to challenge him in the future.

"It's your decision, Mizukage," the mentor said, keeping his tone neutral.

Yagura nodded, reassured that his plans wouldn't be opposed. He saw no reason to waste this golden opportunity handed to him by the Cloud Village.

Deployment to the Front

Yagura swiftly issued orders. The Kaguya, Yuki, and Hozuki clans were mobilized and sent to the disputed waters.

His rationale was clear:

The Kaguya Clan: Known for their reckless nature, they would likely incite chaos in the region, escalating the conflict. The Yuki Clan: Their ice-based abilities were formidable, but they were also rivals who needed to be kept in check. The Hozuki Clan: A historically influential clan that posed a long-term threat to his rule.

Yagura didn't bother replying to the Third Raikage directly. "Sending people is response enough," he muttered with a smirk.

The Cloud Village's Investigation

Back in the Cloud Village, the Third Raikage was singularly focused on uncovering what had happened to Turtle Island. He refused to believe that such a catastrophe could have been caused by anything but a significant force.

Dodai, his trusted aide, returned with a report after extensive investigation.

"Lord Raikage, based on the evidence, we believe that Turtle Island was attacked by a massive creature. The remains show clear signs of teeth marks from something very large."

The Third Raikage's brows furrowed. "Teeth marks? Are you telling me that some colossal beast destroyed Turtle Island?"

"That's what the evidence suggests," Dodai replied, though his tone lacked confidence.

The Third Raikage leaned back, stroking his chin thoughtfully. "Do you think such a creature could still exist in the ninja world? Something capable of overwhelming the Turtle-Island's defenses?"

Dodai hesitated. "It's… unlikely, Lord Raikage. While there are large creatures in the world, nothing of this scale has been documented. The Tailed Beasts themselves are already anomalies."

The Third Raikage wasn't satisfied. His disappointment was evident. "Is that all you have? No other clues?"

Dodai shook his head. "We're still gathering intelligence, but so far, the findings are inconclusive."

The Third Raikage slammed his fist on the desk, cracking it slightly. "Keep searching. I want answers."
