The unique battle style of the Poliwrath threw Cynthia off guard. It was clear she hadn't obtained any intelligence on Karpen's Poliwrath; otherwise, she wouldn't have been in such a precarious position.
But Cynthia was Cynthia—unflappable as ever. After recalling her defeated Empoleon, she quickly sent out her next Pokémon.
This one resembled a slug, though its back was brown and its underbelly was pink. It was none other than a Gastrodon—the West Sea variant of the Pokémon that evolved from Shellos in the Sinnoh region.
Gastrodon had both Water and Ground attributes. As it entered the water, the surrounding area began to turn murky. Within moments, the entire water arena had become muddy brown.
Taking advantage of its camouflage, Gastrodon seamlessly blended into the polluted water.
Meanwhile, the Poliwrath remained on the floating ice, its eyes closed, maintaining its drawn-blade stance, unfazed by Gastrodon's tactics.
Clearly, the Poliwrath was a classic counter-puncher and Cynthia, noticing this, allowed Gastrodon to alter the battlefield freely.
She also understood that the Poliwrath wasn't in top condition. That devastating slash earlier had to have consumed a significant amount of its energy.
"Gastrodon, use Mud Bomb!"
As soon as Gastrodon had reshaped the battlefield, Cynthia ordered it to attack.
Emerging from the muddy water, Gastrodon launched a barrage of muddy orbs from its brown, slimy back.
At the same time, three identical Gastrodon clones appeared from other directions, all attacking the Poliwrath with Mud Bomb.
"Is this Substitute? Not just one, but four, and all under synchronized control? This Gastrodon has terrifying talent and potential!"
Watching through the screen, Sato was astounded by Cynthia's Gastrodon. Its ability to split into four and launch simultaneous attacks left him marveling at the power of her Pokémon.
While Sato was in awe, the Tower Masters watching from the VIP box were even more shocked. Their expressions changed drastically as they stared at Cynthia in disbelief.
"Am I seeing things? A Gastrodon controlling four at once?"
"No, you're not. Who is this girl? Karpen's in serious trouble this time."
"Four-way control! Even if it's exploiting Gastrodon's unique body properties to execute the Substitute tactic, this level of control is astonishing. None of us have Pokémon capable of such feats. This girl named Cynthia has limitless potential!"
The Tower Masters were stunned, their admiration for Cynthia clear in their voices.
The ability of a Pokémon to execute multiple moves simultaneously was a testament to its power. When these moves synergized into combo attacks, they became devastating.
Both Empoleon's Aqua Drill Peck (a combination of Aqua Jet and Drill Peck) and the Poliwrath's Ice Blade Strike (a combination of Ice Punch and Focus Punch) were examples of such combos.
(Focus Punch: A Fighting-type physical move with a power of 150. It requires the user to charge for one turn before attacking. If the user is hit during the charge, the move fails.)
Creating these combo moves required a Trainer's ingenuity, a deep understanding of their Pokémon's capabilities, and an intimate knowledge of various moves.
Cynthia's Gastrodon exemplified this mastery.
Its unique body allowed it to remain alive even if split into pieces, with all fragments under its control.
Under Cynthia's training, it had reached the pinnacle of four-way synchronized control, perfecting Substitute to an unparalleled level.
The Gastrodon's clones were as strong as its original body, capable of executing the same moves.
The only flaw was that they lacked independent thought, functioning as lifeless shells guided by the original.
Faced with such a formidable Gastrodon, Karpen's calm demeanor cracked for a moment before he quickly composed himself. He immediately commanded the Poliwrath to evade.
Unlike clean water, muddy water provided more traction, enabling the Poliwrath to dash across the surface swiftly.
It skillfully dodged the Mud Bombs from all four Gastrodon, closing the distance to one of them. Drawing its blade, it unleashed an Ice Blade Strike without any charge-up.
This swift and powerful strike cleaved the Gastrodon in two.
Or so it seemed.
Instead of being cut, the Gastrodon split itself in half preemptively, avoiding the attack. The Poliwrath's blade struck only muddy water.
However, the icy chill from the Ice Blade Strike froze the Gastrodon and its surroundings, creating a frozen prison.
Yet, trouble soon followed. The Poliwrath found one of its legs frozen, entangled by the Gastrodon's supple body.
"Scald!"
Seeing this, Cynthia smiled faintly.
Seizing the opportunity created by one clone's sacrifice, she commanded the other three Gastrodon to attack.
"Protect!"
Karpen, realizing the Poliwrath couldn't dodge, ordered it to use its precious defensive move.
The three Gastrodon sprayed scalding hot water at the Poliwrath. Though its sturdy green energy shield blocked the attacks, the heat lingered.
The shield's protection also extended to the frozen Gastrodon, allowing it to thaw. This thawed Gastrodon, still within the shield's range, launched a sneak attack with Scald, breaking through the shield.
The Poliwrath endured the combined onslaught of four Scald attacks.
Despite its Fighting-type resilience, it cried out in pain, its body steaming as though it were a boiled lobster. Its weapon had melted away, leaving it helpless.
The battle was over.
The once-majestic Poliwrath lay defeated in the muddy water, marking Cynthia's Gastrodon as the victor.
